Pryor Fine Art Presents Dennis Campay and Laura Schiff Bean

by Dennis Campay
November 5 through 26

Pryor Fine Art is thrilled to announce its November exhibition, a show featuring Atlanta icon Dennis Campay in his first show at the gallery. Campay’s new works will be shown alongside artist Laura S. Bean. The show begins with an Opening Reception on Friday, November 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. and will run through November 26.

Celebrated mixed-media artist, Dennis Campay, divides his time between Atlanta and the historic neighborhood of San Marco in Jacksonville, Florida. With his paintings, he invokes languorous, richly colored worlds of reverie and reality, intimacy and spiritual journey. Drawing on a language of symbols that suggest rather than shout, Campay’s paintings combine vaguely European cityscapes with distinctly Southern imagery. His pictures present a mesmerizing mix of Doric columns, porticos, slatted shutters, and balconies, gently coexisting with coastal marshes, whitewashed churches, boats, and bridges. Silvery bodies of water, worn books, the solitary piano, and ubiquitous chairs take their place where interiors and exteriors blend and beckon, evoking memories, illusions and dreams.

by Laura Schiff Bean
Campay has received numerous prizes and honors including for his work on paper at the prestigious 2001 Florence Biennale. In 2006 in conjunction with the Quinlan Visual Arts Center he was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant. Most recently in 2010 he has been honored to be the featured artist at the High Arts Day, High Museum of Art, Atlanta and will be a Visiting Artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in April of 2011. Campay has been featured in Art & Antiques magazine, New American Paintings and he is the subject of John T. Spike’s book, Campay: New Paintings (2002). His original mixed media works and drawings are hanging in public and private collections across the United States, including US Airways and King & Spalding, LLP, The University of Florida and Brenau University. Museum acquisitions include the Harn Museum of Art, Gainesville FL, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, GA. and the Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah GA.

Massachusetts artist Laura Schiff Bean has always found significance in clothing, particularly in dresses. Years later, these special garments have become the central theme in her paintings. For Bean, dresses have served as defining icons as she has searched for a definition of self and later for things more abstract and indefinable. As her search expanded, the dresses underwent a metamorphosis, encompassing issues far more personal and conversely, more universal. Her ethereal paintings are a daily record of her search for the truth as well as homage to the searches of women who have come before, as the dresses reveal an interior world of unspoken secrets and leave the viewer possibly feeling a bit naked. Schiff earned a BA from George Washington University and an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has shown throughout Boston and Massachusetts, and this is her second show at Pryor Fine Art.

44th Annual Roswell Arts Festival

September 18 and 19, 2010

The Tradition Continues…

This event helped establish and cement Roswell’s reputation as an arts community and it just keeps giving back to the community in so many ways.

The Event itself features fine arts and high quality original craft created by artists and artisans from throughout the Southeastern U.S. Musical Entertainment, Dance and an array of entertainment highlight the days.

A fun outing for the entire family …. But this festival is so much more. Sponsored by the Roswell Recreation Association, proceeds from the event benefit the recreational needs of the community. The Roswell Arts Festival has made financial contributions toward many of the parks and activities that Roswell has to offer its citizens today. Funds have been donated for the purchase of park land, buildings and furnishings of buildings, equipment, plans, matching funds to obtain grants or make purchases, and probably the most noticeable donation was the Sprayground that opened in 2009 at Riverside Park. The Sprayground was definitely a splashing success. But, it became apparent that shade would make the experience even more fun. So, the Roswell Recreation Association jumped right in (ok, make that waded right in) and provided the funds to erect shade, making the sprayground an even more enjoyable experience.

The terrific all volunteer Roswell Recreation Association makes it possible for all the funds raised from the Roswell Arts Festival to go for use in the Roswell Recreation and Parks Department. They invite you to come to Town Square on September 18 & 19, enjoy some incredible artwork, the ambiance of the Town Square and experience a wonderful community event.

A free shuttle will run from City Hall to the Historic Town Square each day of the event from 10 A.M. – 6 P.M.

An array of festive foods will be available from a variety of vendors tempting you with so many delicious treats!

Center for Puppetry Arts Prepares for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™

LIVE Musical Premiere of Beloved Holiday TV Classic Opens in Atlanta on November 18

Christmas is in the air at the Center for Puppetry Arts! Preparations for its new upcoming holiday show, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™, have been in the works since earlier this year. Adapted and directed by the Center’s Artistic Director, Jon Ludwig, the production is based on the beloved 1964 stop-motion animated special, and provides the audience with the opportunity to experience the timeless tale of Rudolph and his misfit friends in a whole new way: live on stage! Opening on November 18, Ludwig’s adaptation for the puppet stage faithfully embraces the original and will include all of the beloved characters such as Hermey, the elf who is an aspiring dentist, Yukon Cornelius, and the Abominable Snow Monster. The Center is honored to work with Character Arts LLC to debut the first licensed stage production of this holiday classic.

“The story of Rudolph has endured because it talks of self-acceptance, which everyone is looking for,” says Ludwig on the universal appeal of this story. “It’s a classic tale of self-discovery and a true ‘growing-up’ story. Rudolph and Hermey are misfits among misfits, but in the end, their non-conformities are what make them so valuable. I know that just as I was touched so deeply by the original production back in 1964, we can reach many, young and old, through the magic of this great story told within the imaginative medium of live puppet theater.”

The Center’s production team is heading up the monumental task of recreating one of the world’s most treasured holiday classics. The Puppet Building Shop has become a veritable “Santa’s Workshop,” as the team works to design and build the approximately 60 puppets that will appear on stage. Adapting such memorable characters to the puppet stage is not something the team takes lightly; Rudolph is already being recognized as the most “measured” show the Center has ever produced, as meticulous attention is paid to details such as replicating appropriate scale in the production. In order to be as true to the original as possible, Resident Puppet Designer/Builder Jason von Hinezmeyer has watched the original 1964 movie more than 200 times, much of it frame by frame.

As Rudolph production flies along, the excitement at the Center continues to build as the timeless tale comes to life. “Dedicated management of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ and The Island of Misfit Toys™ has always been at the core of Character Arts operations,” said Jonathan Flom, the principal of Character Arts LLC who manages the rights of the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ brand. “We can think of no better stewards than the Center for Puppetry Arts and are thrilled to have them help us bring this beloved story to a whole new audience. We are extremely excited by the Center’s production and can’t wait to see this story come to life.”

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will run November 18 – January 2, 2010 at the following times:

Carnival begins Wednesday thru Sunday, September 22-26
“Rupert’s Orchestra” Concert: Saturday, September 11
Saturday, September 25
Sunday, September 26

More than 350 arts and crafts booths and food vendors highlight the 28th annual Duluth Fall Festival. This family-friendly event includes a parade, music, dancers, a full size carnival and a 5K road race. The two-day celebration is held in historic downtown Duluth, Georgia on the last Saturday and Sunday in September and is consistently voted one of the best Festivals in the region.

NEW THIS YEAR: The festival will feature a full carnival that begins on Wednesday and runs through the end of the festival. Kids will have fun in the games area, which has activities for all ages, from face painting and sand art to carnival rides.

The annual Concert will be held on Saturday, September 11, at 6:30 on the Towne Green. This year will feature Rupert’s Orchestra, the top party band in the Southeast, who plays everything from current Top 40 hits to Motown and Classic Rock to the 1940’s Big Band Sound. Opening act will feature Kozmic Mama. Admission is FREE.

Kicking off the Festival on Saturday morning is the parade, which includes school bands and orchestras, antique automobiles, local school cheerleaders and sports teams. Immediately following the parade is an opening ceremony honoring local dignitaries. The day is filled with a wide variety of continuous entertainment showcased on three stages. The arts and craft booths offer an amazing variety of hand-crafted merchandise. Food vendors offer kettle corn, BBQ, roasted corn, gyros, and, of course, funnel cakes.

Sunday morning at 8 a.m. starts with a 5K road race / walk through downtown Duluth. Afterwards, a local church holds a non-denominational community worship service. The remainder of Sunday is full of more entertainment, arts and crafts, and great food.

Parking in downtown Duluth is limited; free shuttle service is available from four offsite parking locations. For more information about the Duluth Fall Festival, see the following web site: www.duluthfallfestival.org .

The Duluth Fall Festival started in 1983 and has been an annual event ever since. More than 400 volunteers work throughout the year planning the Festival. All proceeds from the Festival go towards improving and beautifying historic downtown Duluth. Some examples of the improvements made possible by the Festival Committee include Taylor Park and the Festival Center amphitheatre.

"13 Most Beautiful...Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests" to Receive its Georgia Premiere in Augusta

13 Most Beautiful...Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests is a multimedia performance featuring large scale video projection of rare Andy Warhol portrait films with live musical accompaniment by indie-rock luminaries Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips. Among these 13 portraits shot between 1963 and 1966 are those of Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick, musicians Lou Reed and Nico, and actor Dennis Hopper.

13 Most Beautiful was commissioned jointly by The Andy Warhol Museum and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and has been seen the world over including dates at Lincoln Center in New York City, The Barbican in London, and The Sydney Opera House.

This is not only the sole performance scheduled in Georgia, this is something of a regional premiere as well.

Especially unique to this performance is that after 13 Most Beautiful, Dean & Britta along with their band will perform a set of tunes by Dean's former band, the seminal and somewhat legendary Galaxie 500.

13 Most Beautiful is being presented at the 2010 Westobou Festival on Saturday September 18th at 8 p.m. at The Sacred Heart Cultural Center in Augusta, Georgia. Tickets can be obtained at www.westoboufestival.org/tickets or by calling (706) 550-4943

Celebrating 42 years of arts and crafts, Stone Mountain Park’s Yellow Daisy Festival, is at the top in its game. The festival has grown to become one of the nation’s most prestigious venues for crafters and has been consistently voted one of the country’s top arts and crafts shows by Sunshine Artist Magazine’s Annual “200 Best” survey. This year’s show will be held September 9, 10, 11 and 12 at Stone Mountain Park’s Special Events Meadow.

The Yellow Daisy Festival includes 425 crafters and artists from across the U.S. These top artisans display their hand-made work, in categories such as pottery, fabric, painting, jewelry, sculpture, dolls, photography, fine arts & crafts and traditional arts & crafts.

The annual celebration draws an estimated 200,000 shopping enthusiasts out to the four day event. The event draws multi-generational shoppers from daughters, mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers as a family pilgrimage to shop for the hot craft item of the year. The event has also become a haven for girlfriend getaways. Packs of girlfriends show up ready to shop the crafter-lined wooded trails donned in the same color or identical shirts, so they can be easily spotted amongst the sea of shoppers.

“I am always surprised at the passion of the Yellow Daisy shoppers arriving as early as 8 am, even though the event doesn’t open until 10 am” said Wendy Thomas, special events manager for Stone Mountain Park. “Our crafters tell us this is the first event that they see shoppers purchasing for Christmas.”

In addition to the unique arts and crafts, the festival offers free entertainment and an assortment of festival foods to meet a variety of tastes. The Children’s Corner will provide crafts, entertainment, face painting and Fair Hair (a fun and funky hairdo vendor). The Men’s Den is a great venue for the gentlemen coming to the event that don’t want to miss the big game. The Men’s Den is outfitted with recliners and big screen TVs showing fall football.

Marian Baker was chosen as the 2010 Yellow Daisy Festival featured artist. Her original design “Daisy Chick” is featured on the festival’s promotional items. These items are for sale only during the festival. Baker, a contemporary folk artist from Oneonta, Ala., recycles everyday materials such as game boards and cigar boxes to use as her canvas. Each original piece is painted with oil pastels, acrylics and charcoal pencil on top of adhered vintage paper. Baker then begins a process where the piece is then painted, stamped, distressed and sealed with layers of wax. “Ninety-five percent of my materials are recycled” said Baker. “I find new value in discarded items.”

Shoppers can stop by the Humana tent, the festival’s presenting sponsor, for free giveaways and be entered for a chance to win a Stone Mountain Park Annual Pass Package good for four (4) Mountain Memberships.

Stone Mountain Park is listed in Frommer’s 500 Places to Visit with Your Kids Before They Grow Up and cited by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as one of “35 Natural Wonders in Georgia You Must See …” Stone Mountain Park is located 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta. To get to the park, take I-285 to Exit 39B, Hwy. 78 East. Stone Mountain Park is Exit 8 on Hwy. 78. "PBS Arts" Launches on PBS.org

New Site Expands Arts Content as Part of Broader Plan to Make More Arts and Cultural Offerings Accessible to Millions of Americans

– Website Debuts on Fifth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Features Virtual Exhibit with New Orleans Artist Thomas Mann –

PBS President and CEO Paula A. Kerger today announced the launch of PBS Arts (www.pbs.org/arts), a new website that offers Americans the opportunity to experience the arts and explore the creative process through special virtual exhibits, videos from PBS national and local programs and interactive features. The website is part of PBS’ ongoing commitment to strengthen public engagement in all forms of artistic expression and performance – in front of the camera and behind the scenes – and to bring more of the arts into the lives of millions of Americans.

PBS Arts’ initial offerings include four concurrent virtual exhibitions, including “Ruin and Revival,” which features works from the “Storm Cycle” collection by New Orleans-based artist Thomas Mann. In this exhibition, Mann commemorates the city’s ongoing recovery and renovation, and celebrates its resilience. Producers from the PBS series CRAFT IN AMERICA filmed Mann in and around New Orleans at locations that inspired his sculptural works. The “Ruin and Revival” virtual exhibition offers additional arts-focused Katrina footage, including a Louisiana Public Broadcasting report, video excerpts of PBS host Tavis Smiley’s recent journey to New Orleans and Smiley’s conversation with Branford Marsalis about the Musicians’ Village, a physical and spiritual home for performing artists in the city.

“PBS and its member stations strive to help the American people discover the power and remarkable breadth of the arts,” said Ms. Kerger. “For 40 years, we’ve used television to give the public a front-row seat to the world’s greatest cultural experiences, and now PBS Arts will help us achieve this goal online. PBS Arts will also allow us to transport audiences from these front-row seats and give them opportunities to interact with artists and share their experiences of being engaged and enriched by the arts.”

PBS Arts is organized into exhibitions and searchable by artistic discipline. The website will feature initially at least one new exhibition each month with content spanning all genres of the performing and visual arts, including dance, theater, contemporary music, opera, painting, sculpture, film and photography. One new web exclusive, SOUND TRACKS Presents “Quick Hits,” is a spinoff of the PBS SOUND TRACKS: MUSIC WITHOUT BORDERS television pilot, which showcased stories about music and musicians from around the world. The premiere episode of “Quick Hits” presents Italian superstar Jovanotti (considered the Bono or Bruce Springsteen of Italy) in a San Francisco stage performance and interview with public radio reporter/host Marco Werman, along with a photo slideshow. In September, “Quick Hits” will feature the Brazilian singer and actor Seu Jorge. Other exhibitions will showcase stories and videos from signature PBS series such as ART:21 and AUSTIN CITY LIMITS.

PBS Arts will explore the process of artistic creation, behind the scenes and directly with the artists. Users will be encouraged to comment on the exhibitions and performances as well as upload their own related content. PBS Arts will allow viewers to share content with their friends, family and followers on Facebook and Twitter.

Full episodes of — and additional footage from — upcoming PBS specials and series such as CIRCUS, a six-hour program premiering in November, will give PBS Arts visitors additional opportunities to delve into the many arts and cultural programs found on PBS.

The site’s launch coincides with the recently released National Endowment for the Arts report, Audience 2.0: How Technology Influences Arts Participation (http://www.nea.gov/research/new-media-report/New-Media-Report.pdf), which indicates that people who engage with the arts on-air or online are three times more likely to attend a “live” event than non-media participants. For many adults, electronic media represents their sole means of experiencing dance, theater and music, the research showed.

The debut of PBS Arts kicks off PBS’s multi-platform initiative to reinvigorate public engagement with the arts through an exploration of performance, artistic expression and the creative process — on-air, online, in the classroom and in every community. PBS believes access to the arts educates the nation’s children, defines cultures, increases creativity and innovation, fosters civic engagement and promotes appreciation for diverse traditions. With the goal to cultivate vibrant and connected communities, PBS brings more arts to more Americans than any other media company.

Funding for the launch of PBS Arts has been provided by Anne Ray Charitable Trust and the National Endowment for the Arts.

PBS, with its nearly 360 member stations, offers all Americans — from every walk of life — the opportunity to explore new ideas and new worlds through television and online content. Each month, PBS reaches more than 118 million people through television and nearly 21 million people online, inviting them to experience the worlds of science, history, nature and public affairs; to hear diverse viewpoints; and to take front-row seats to world-class drama and performances. PBS’ broad array of programs has been consistently honored by the industry’s most coveted award competitions. Teachers of children from pre-K through 12th grade turn to PBS for digital content and services that help bring classroom lessons to life. PBS’ premier children’s TV programming and its website, pbskids.org, are parents’ and teachers’ most trusted partners in inspiring and nurturing curiosity and love of learning in children. More information about PBS is available at www.pbs.org, one of the leading dot-org websites on the Internet.

Talking about Elliott King, Guest Curator for High Museum's Dali Exhibit

We just had a tiny discussion on Twitter about the wonderfully Dali-brilliant Elliott King. King is the guest curator for the High Museum of Art Atlanta's Dali: The Late Work.exhibit. He is a phenomenal fount of knowledge when it comes to Salvador Dali.

The exhibit is outstanding as we've written about in previous articles -- you must go see it while it's here in Atlanta. This is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to see works from so many diverse locations all under one roof.

If you get to hear King talk about the works at any of the numerous film showings or other public offerings you will be doubly amazed! He is truly a Dali scholar and we think the High made the perfect choice with King as guest curator.

On our Twitter note we said King was "dapper"... We thought we'd share a couple of photos and let you decide whether calling him dapper was the right description. Oh, we also said he was very cool. Love the glasses, love the shoes, the hankie in the pocket... We have a bio of King somewhere, gonna have to dig it up for you. He's worth an article all on his own.

Here's our commentary on the Dali exhibit:

We went... we saw... we did not conquer!

Two of us from Arts Across Georgia trekked downtown to the High Museum of Art Atlanta on Tuesday to see Dali: The Late Work. I realize it isn't very suave to... More

(If you go to the article you'll find the official press release from the High on the exhibit on the same page, PLUS a slide show. We're going back again, and maybe again, and again...)

Here's another article (we may have to make a special trip on Delta just to fly on this airplane!):

Dali’s Mustache Finds New Home on a Delta Plane

7/27/10 In celebration of the High’s new exhibition, “Dalí: The Late Work,” Delta has decked out a 757 plane with a Salvador Dalí-esque mustache. The plane, which went into service today, will... More

That means, there’s something for everyone, and the result is the best two-day art event in Gwinnett County.

“This year, we are increasing the artist market, so that festival-goers have more fun art to explore.” Schube, along with her partner, Cindy Flynn of Splash Festivals, also produce the successful Dunwoody Art Festival held on Mother’s Day weekend in the heart of the City of Dunwoody.

The weekend celebration draws crowds of 30,000 – 40,000 annually and will feature continuous jazz, bluegrass and live entertainment on Thrasher Park stage, as well as great food and exciting children’s rides. As a special bonus from the City of Norcross, Friday night, October 1 from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm, the Stephen Lee Band will be playing the blues, and Saturday night, October 2 from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm, and the Beau Hall Band will be singing the blues as well for the crowds. The popular Kidz Zone returns with the lively art pavilion for young artists of all ages to enjoy free arts and crafts projects, and Thrasher Park’s expanded playground is a must-see for youngsters and their parents.

A silent auction filled with decorated chairs by local school students will be waiting for the highest bidders at the Norcross Art Fest “chairs for charity” booth, managed by the Norcross Arts Alliance. Local Historic Norcross boutiques, shops and restaurants will also be open during the event to welcome visitors. Proceeds go to the Norcross Lions Club to be distributed to their wonderful charities. Parking and shuttle service are free. For more information, check out www.NorcrossArtFest.com

Spotlight Solo Show: Luba Sharapan (Opening Today)

MudFire Gallery joins Atlanta's Citywide Gallery Opening on Saturday, August 21, with a showing of new works by resident artist and MudFire founder Luba Sharapan. The gallery will be open for visitors from Noon to 8:00 pm, with an artist reception with snacks from 5:00 pm to 8:00pm.

Luba Sharapan is a studio potter who creates dinnerware and other functional objects that feature a unique painterly finish reminiscent of encaustic. She works with a palette of underglazes, slips, engobes and stains to achieve a textured, layered effect with a soft satin finish. Luba uses saturated liner glazes, appropriated text and imagery via decals, bold silhouettes, and hints of platinum and gold lusters in the work to add nuance, refinement, and occasionally humor.

Atlanta's Citywide Gallery Opening includes over 30 galleries, museums, and art spaces for a day-long extravaganza of art in all media and modes.

MudFire's Spotlight Solo series offers quick, focused looks at new work by outstanding studio potters from around the country.

Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary Announces the Selections for the 2010 Ocean Film Festival

A seven member panel has completed judging the submissions for the 2010 Gray’s Reef Ocean Film Festival scheduled to take place Sept. 17-19 at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Trustees Theater. More than 90 films were submitted for consideration; 33 were selected for the festival in addition to ten student films. Students from the Savannah College of Art and Design are competing for the Dr. Robert O. Levitt Prize for local emerging film makers.

Several selections focus on the Gulf Coast region, an area of special interest in light of the Deep Water Horizon oil disaster. Filmmaker Jon Bowermester will bring his latest documentary, “SoLa, Louisiana Water Stories’’ to the festival Saturday evening September 18. Bowermester re-cut parts of this look at ocean, culture, economics and survival along the Gulf Coast to provide an-up-to-the minute look at Deep Water Horizon disaster. Two local filmmakers and recent SCAD graduates, Landon Lott and Tim Arnold, bring their personal views of the disaster with their film “Skimming the Surface.’’

Other film highlights include two new ocean issue films from National Geographic and several winners from the 2010 International Wildlife Film Festival. The 2010 Gray’s Reef Ocean Film Festival Judges’ Best Pick film, “Students Saving the Ocean,’’ will be shown twice during the festival. In the film, young students show us all how to “live like we love the ocean.’’ Sunday evening is devoted to student environmental documentaries.

The festival includes a Saturday morning segment devoted to the students of Thunderbolt Elementary Marine Science Academy for their accomplishments in studying marine life. All students are welcome.
Festival film winners include: “Students Saving the Ocean,’’ Judges’ Best Pick and winner of the Call to Action Category; “Witness to Hiroshima,” winner of the Short Film Category; “Cold as Ice’’ and “What’s Down There,’’ joint winners of the Ocean Exploration & Discovery Category and “Wooden Bones” and “Lost on a Reef,’’ joint winners of the Maritime Heritage Category.

Judges included Reed Bohne, Superintendent of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes Region of the National Marine Sanctuary Program and former superintendent of Gray’s Reef; John Duren who serves on the boards of the Skidaway Marine Science Foundation and the Coastal Conservation Association of Georgia; Fitz Haile of The Creative Coast Initiative; Karen Grainey, president of Clean Coast; Stephen Hooten of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney; Mary Landers, environmental reporter for the Savannah Morning News; and Michael Sullivan, External Affairs Manager, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. Staff of the National Geographic Society’s Film and Television unit judges the student film submitted for the Levitt Award.

The Gray’s Reef Ocean Film Festival remains a free festival with the mission to “To educate, inspire and enlighten coastal Georgia residents about the world’s oceans and the issues facing them. We use films to explore the beauty of the sea, the complexity of the marine ecosystem, the creatures that inhabit it, our maritime heritage and humankind’s relationship with the oceans and the environment in a positive, healthy, family-oriented format.”

Georgia Shakespeare is pleased to announce: Challenge Grant Met!

Georgia Shakespeare is thrilled to announce meeting the criteria of a $50,000 challenge grant during the 25th Anniversary Summer Festival. The challenge allowed for six months to meet the goal and double the gift to $100,000 but supporters rose to the occasion and met the challenge inside ten weeks, the duration of the Summer Festival.

In early June, the John H and Wilhelmina D Harland Charitable Foundation issued a challenge to Georgia Shakespeare: raise $50,000 independently by the end of the calendar year and they’d award another $25,000. The gifts had to be new, or an increased gift over 2009 gifts, and from individuals only. The challenge was announced at Opening Night of Shrew: the Musical, and the next day, an anonymous donor offered to match the challenge, offering an additional $25,000 when conditions are met, therefore making it a one-for-one challenge.

Georgia Shakespeare exceeded this $50,000 goal by the end of the Summer Festival. In just under ten weeks, the company raised over $64,000, meeting the challenge, and is now eligible for the balance of $50,000.

“We are humbled by the support we’ve received from our donors and patrons in rising to meet this challenge. It’s a very difficult climate for a challenge like this, and we are thrilled beyond measure to have met it,” says Richard Garner, Producing Artistic Director. “We are also hopeful for the optimistic message it sends: maybe things are turning around economically, in general, and for the arts.”

Individual donors and patrons at each performance this summer were encouraged to make gifts in an effort to reach this challenge. The company of actors also got into the act, offering to host post-performance “meet & greets” with any guests who donated $50 or more during intermission. The actors also mingled in the lobby after each performance collecting cash gifts in red buckets. The “bucket brigade” resulted in nearly 14% of the monies raised. Georgia Shakespeare closed its highly acclaimed 25th Anniversary Summer Festival ahead of projections for ticket sales, as well.

Next, the company will produce The Odyssey: a Journey Home, October 7-31. The Odyssey: a Journey Home, adapted by Richard Garner and Georgia Shakespeare’s Associate Artists, parallels Odysseus’ 10-year trek home with that of a modern-day U.S. soldier’s return from Afghanistan. And rounding out the season, A Christmas Story, the live stage show of the popular movie, runs December 7-24.

Georgia Southern University's Performing Arts Center Announces 2010-2011 Season Schedule

Season ticket renewals will begin this week for the 2010-2011 season at Georgia Southern University’s Performing Arts Center which will feature a diverse blend of music, dance and dramatic performances including Stomp! and A Chorus Line.

“Fans of theatre and music have much to look forward to as we begin our new season,” said Performing Arts Center (PAC) Director Albert Pertalion. “We are thrilled to bring performers and performances that have electrified crowds around the world here to Statesboro, and we urge people to buy their tickets early to these in-demand shows.”

The season opens Friday, September 24 with the return of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. This string-band trio was such a hit when they performed at the PAC two years ago that audiences clamored to have them return.

Champions of the Dance, which is the stage version of the hit television series Dancing with the Stars, will “wow” audiences on October 8. Many of the same dancers and the same choreographer from the television series make up this stage performance complete with amazing costumes, sets, and lighting.

On November 5, Gershwin on Broadway will delight audiences. A pianist and two vocalists will perform some of George Gershwin’s most beloved classics from the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Christmas comes a little early to the Performing Arts Center on November 18 when vocalist John Berry performs. His rich baritone voice lends a quality to holiday selections that have made him an area favorite.

The percussion extravaganza Stomp! is guaranteed to be one of the hottest tickets of the season. This musical that originated in London has brought audiences to their feet around the globe. The cast takes ordinary - and extraordinary - objects and turns them into instruments during this enthralling show that has garnered rave reviews worldwide and is sure to do so when it is performed at the PAC March 8.

Tango Buenos Aeries brings the world’s most romantic, and seductive, dance to the PAC on March 24.

The season ends with the classic Broadway smash A Chorus Line on April 12. This musical about a New York audition has thrilled audiences for decades. Fans who want to see this show are encouraged to purchase their tickets early. Season ticket renewals will be on sale from August 10 through August 25. New season ticket subscriptions are available beginning August 31, and single tickets will go on sale September 14. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call the Performing Arts Center box office at 912-478-7999 or visit www.georgiasouthern.edu/pac.
