Upcoming Exhibits at the High Atlanta

Alec Soth: Black Line of Woods
August 8, 2009–January 3, 2010
Organized by the High Museum of Art, this exhibition is part of the “Picturing the South” commission series, representing one of the most distinctive and internationally significant aspects of the High’s growing photography collection. Alec Soth is the sixth photographer to have been commissioned in this series. Previous participants have included Dawoud Bey, Emmet Gowin, Sally Mann, Richard Misrach and Alex Webb. This exhibition explores spiritual and hermetic life in the rural South including studies that represent a variety of nature subjects, examples of manmade intervention (tree houses, forts, cabins and tents) and portraits (hermits, monks, campers and survivalists). Inspired by Flannery O’Connor, Soth creates photographs that are full of warmth and humor with narrative elements that are suggestive of Southern Gothic literature.

Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius
October 6, 2009–February 21, 2010
Exploring Leonardo da Vinci’s profound interest in and influence on sculpture, this exhibition will feature approximately 50 works, including more than 20 sketches and studies by Leonardo, some of which will be on view in the United States for the first time. The exhibition will also feature work by Donatello, Rubens, Verrocchio, and Rustici—including Rustici’s three monumental bronzes from the façade of the Baptistery in Florence that comprise “John the Baptist Preaching to a Levite and a Pharisee,” which was recently restored and has never left Florence. Also included are works from world-renowned collections, including that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Musée du Louvre, the British Museum, and the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. The exhibition will shed new light on Leonardo’s seminal role in the development of Renaissance sculpture and the work of artists who followed him through an examination of the sculpture that Leonardo studied, the sketches and studies he created for his own sculptural projects (the majority of which were never realized), and his interactions with other Renaissance sculptors. “Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius” is organized by the High Museum of Art in association with the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and in collaboration with the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, Italy. The exhibition is generously supported by Lead Corporate Partner Delta Air Lines and sponsor Campanile Plaza. Support has also been provided by The Samuel H. Kress Foundation and Leonardo Society members Loraine P. Williams, Lanier-Goodman Foundation, Morgens West Foundation, and Mr. and Mrs. Gary W. Rollins, with additional support from the Atlanta Foundation. Cargo support of the Sforza horse is provided by UPS. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

John Portman: Art & Architecture
October 17, 2009–January 17, 2010
The High Museum of Art will be the sole venue for “John Portman: Art & Architecture,” an exhibition featuring architectural projects, furniture, paintings, and sculpture by Atlanta-based architect and artist John Portman. The fifteen completed and current architectural projects that will be featured span five decades of national and international developments, including the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (1967) that is globally renowned as the first modern atrium hotel. The projects will be presented with large-scale photographs, design plans, elevations, text, articles, and in some cases, architectural models. The exhibition will also feature paintings and sculptures by Portman—most never before publicly exhibited. The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with a major essay introduction by Paul Goldberger, noted historian and Architecture Critic for “The New Yorker” since 1997. “John Portman: Art & Architecture” is organized by the High Museum of Art, and is curated by Jeffrey Grove, the High’s Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

The Portrait Unbound: Photographs by Robert Weingarten
January 23–May 30, 2010
The High will premier an exhibition of new work by California-based photographer Robert Weingarten in January 2010. Consisting of twenty large-scale (60 x 90 in.) digitally created portraits of American icons, Weingarten’s project represents a bold departure from traditional camera portraiture. In “The Portrait Unbound,” Weingarten has created photographs that are highly sophisticated digital compositions of imagery that allude to specific interests, achievements or moments within the subject’s life. The result is a unique and compelling composite of images which describes the subject through biographical rather than physical information. “The Portrait Unbound: Photographs by Robert Weingarten” is organized by the High Museum and is curated by Julian Cox, the High’s Curator of Photography.

The Allure of the Automobile
March 21– June 20, 2010
The exhibition will present 18 of the world’s rarest and most brilliantly conceived cars ranging from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, including masterpieces by Bugatti, Duesenberg, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Ferrari. These cars combine state-of-the-art engineering, meticulous craftsmanship and groundbreaking design to create works of “rolling sculpture.” The 18 automobiles on view at the High will include one-of-a-kind, custom-built designs that incorporate remarkable advances in automotive styling and engineering. The sections of the exhibition will trace the evolution of the motorcar, examining the contrasts between European and American design, the influence of decorative arts and design and the significant changes in automotive styling and engineering both before and after World War II. The featured automobiles have also won awards at prestigious world events such as the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, broken records on racetracks and were previously owned by noted car enthusiasts such as Hollywood legends Clark Gable and Steve McQueen. “The Allure of the Automobile” is organized by the High Museum of Art. The exhibition is made possible by its Lead Corporate Sponsor, Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Additional support provided by NAPA. The exhibition’s guest curator is Ken Gross, writer, automotive historian and former executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Ron Labaco, the High’s curator of decorative arts and design, is the managing curator. The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue.

European Design Since 1985: Shaping the New Century
June 5, 2010 – August 29, 2010
This exhibition is the first critical survey of contemporary Western European decorative arts and product design from the turn of the 21st century. Organized along the counterbalanced themes of modernism and postmodernism, the seminal works on display reveal the various stylistic movements that changed the face of design worldwide in the two decades after 1985. The furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, and metalwork range from familiar mass-produced objects to limited-edition luxury goods by such celebrity designers as Philippe Starck and Marc Newson, and rising younger talents such as Marcel Wanders and Tord Boontje. European Design Since 1985: Shaping the New Century is organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Denver Art Museum in conjunction with Kingston University, London.

Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine
February 5, 2011 – May 8, 2011
This exhibition of more than 20 works—many large in scale and all created since 1994—looks at the influence of African art on the work of Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey. Featuring floor and wall sculptures, works-on-paper, and glass works, the exhibition highlights the artist’s experimentation with diverse forms. African sculptures supplement the exhibition. The exhibition takes its title, “Memory as Medicine,” from sets of “cabinet sculptures,” conceived by the artist as medicine cabinets for his socially cathartic art. Their contents include a broad range of culturally charged objects, imagery, and raw materials—from indigo to tobacco leaves to Georgia red earth—to lyrically connect the dots of the too-often disconnected histories of peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora. Bailey’s art—informed by a strong social and historical consciousness—combines a rich, narrative content with a high-level of abstraction and poetic resonance to explore questions of history and memory.

The King mural spans 180 ft. of history and includes various periods in the life of Dr. King and the civil rights movement. Please join the City of Atlanta’s Public Art Program and artist Louis Delsarte in painting the mural during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Community Day on Saturday July 25, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Studioplex, 659 Auburn Avenue NE. “Mr. Delsarte’s skill as an artist will be an asset for the National Historic District. This mural will emphasize and enhance the story of Dr. King in a very visible place,” said Camille Russell Love, Director, Office of Cultural Affairs.

This mural gives Mr. Delsarte the opportunity to pay homage to this great leader. This challenge has become his joy.

"This is the most incredible honor that I have been given since the beginning of my career. I want this mural to reflect the magnitude of King's sacrifices and his work as a civil rights leader,” said Louis Delsarte, Artist.

The artist had the pleasure of interviewing and interacting with members of the King family who provided pertinent details about the civil rights leader. His work is in several public collections including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Fine Art, the Hammonds House Museum in Atlanta, the National Gallery of Art in Bermuda and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Picturing a National Treasure: The Grand Canyon in Art

/PRNewswire/ -- On August 8, 2009, the Booth Western Art Museum opens two exhibitions celebrating the Grand Canyon - "Painting the Canyon: Selected Works from Grand Canyon Collections" and "Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography." The exhibitions will be on display in the museum's Special Exhibition Gallery through October 25.

"Painting the Canyon: Selected Works from Grand Canyon Collections," an exhibition exclusive to the Booth Museum, features over 25 paintings from the collections of Grand Canyon National Park Museum and the Grand Canyon Association (GCA). Some of the paintings were completed prior to the Canyon's designation as a National Park in 1913, and some of the paintings have never before been exhibited outside the Park. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Thomas Moran, who was instrumental in making the Canyon "grand," and Curt Walters, one of today's most important living Grand Canyon painters.

"Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography" is a creation of the Grand Canyon Association and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). This exhibition of 60 photographs taken during the century shows how this landscape is still often wild and unforgiving but compelling for both reverence and recreation. "Lasting Light" also chronicles photography and how it has promoted the Canyon as a popular destination for Americans and the world at large. Some images allow the viewer to marvel at this natural wonder without the camping equipment, rations, or repelling ropes that have often been required to capture the Canyon on film.

While deep in geological history, it is only within the last 150 years that the Grand Canyon was explored by adventurers and artists. Today, it stands as an icon of America and continues to inspire painters, photographers, and those who view their images.

The Seen Gallery Welcomes Artist Michael Whelan to Repertoire

Opening Night Reception on Saturday, September 5 from 7 to 10 p.m.

The Seen Gallery will proudly welcome the renowned artist Michael Whelan to its diverse family of artists, with an opening night reception on September 5, from 7-10 p.m. Whelan’s paintings may be best defined as “visionary art” in that they transcend the physical world as we know it and offer us glimpses into spaces that we may only experience in our dreams, evoking an immediate emotional response. With rich symbolism throughout his work, the attention that Whelan pays to detail gives a fresh, awe-inspiring perspective each time a painting is viewed.

“The sublimity Michael Whelan creates in his paintings reminds me of why I am a purveyor of fine art—to share it with those individuals who want to enhance their lives and transcend to a higher order of being. That’s what looking into his work brings to mind—new worlds that enhance one’s sensibilities,” says Amy Bradford, Co-owner of The Seen Gallery.

Whelan grew up in the Western US as his father, an aerospace engineer, moved from one research facility to another. During high school, he took summer classes at Denver's Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, but entered San Jose State University as a Pre-Med Biology Major. While there he worked in the Anatomy and Physiology Department, gaining first-hand knowledge of human anatomy, but he continued to study art and some of his medical drawings appeared in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He eventually changed his major and graduated as a President's Scholar with a BA in Painting. Whelan then studied briefly at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, but moved to the New York area after he began receiving offers for book cover assignments. Michael Whelan went on to become a preeminent illustrator and the most awarded cover artist in the science fiction and fantasy field. Winner of an unprecedented 15 Hugo Awards (Science Fiction's Oscar), this month Whelan will join Jules Verne, Mary Shelley, Steven Spielberg, Ray Bradbury and only 50 other SF Luminaries when he is inducted as the first living artist into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

These days Michael Whelan devotes his time to his personal fine art work. His original paintings have been displayed and sold at galleries and museums throughout the United States and around the world. He paints both in acrylic and oil, with some sketches in charcoal, pen and ink, or pencil. He has had 4 art books published, among them “The Art of Michael Whelan”, a deluxe 208 page collection of Whelan art published by Bantam Books. He is a member of the Graphic Artists Guild and the Society of Illustrators in New York City, and he is an Advisor to the Masters in Fine Arts program at Western Connecticut State University near his home in Connecticut. The Seen Gallery is excited to introduce Michael Whelan to their collectors and the Atlanta community.

A multi-discipline art gallery that features established and mid-career artists, The Seen Gallery was founded by photographer Bill Bibb in October 2002. Painter Amy Bradford joined Bill as co-owner and curator in 2005; and, after six years of success at its original location in the Oakhurst Village, the two moved The Seen Gallery to a larger street front location by Decatur Square – an ideal area for sidewalk strolling and window-shopping. The new 1,700 square foot gallery is now conveniently located at 415 Church Street. New exhibitions will open every four to five weeks, creating a fresh, dynamic experience for each visit to the gallery. Visit The Seen Gallery online at www.theseengallery.com.

GSU educator’s photos show other side of Civil Rights Movement

Demonstrations, protests and sit-ins are images that typically come to mind when one thinks of the Civil Rights Movement.

But Doris Derby, director of African-American Student Services and Programs at Georgia State, shows other aspects of this turbulent time in our nation’s history through her photography in a new exhibit.

As an active member of the movement during the 1960s, Derby captured African-Americans working to reform health care, equalize the educational system, spark economic development and revitalize the art world.

Nearly 100 of her photographs will be on display over the next three months at the Hammonds House Museum in Atlanta in an exhibit titled, “Photo Griots: Doris Derby and Sue Ross.”
The exhibit will run through Sept. 13 at the museum, located at 503 Peoples St. in Atlanta.

“A lot of my photographs depict self-help activities,” Derby said. “African-Americans in the Civil Rights movement often lost their jobs when they registered to vote, so they started co-ops of several types. This is just one example of the grass root activities that established the foundation for what we take for granted today.”

Derby’s work also shines a light on African-American women during the civil rights movement, including everyday women and notable leaders such as Charlayne Hunter-Gault who integrated the University of Georgia, author Alice Walker and Dorothy Height, president emeritus of the National Council of Negro Women.

Derby and co-exhibitor, Susan Ross, are members of Sistagraphy, an Atlanta-based collective of African-American women photographers.

The title of the exhibit, “Photo Griots,” comes from the African tradition of oral history and now relates to photographic history. Both women hope to tell the story of the African American community through their photographs. Derby chronicles 1960-1970 and Ross covers the 1980s, 1990s and today.

"I am primarily a people photographer, finding grace and dignity in the faces of our people," said Ross who is a photographer for the City of Atlanta mayor’s office and photographs National Black Art Council events.

Derby has previously exhibited her work at Georgia State as well as other venues. Her photos were included in the “Road to Freedom” exhibit at the High Museum in Atlanta last spring and at several museums throughout the United States, including the Smithsonian.

Last summer, Derby also had an exhibit at Georgia State titled “Disappearing Black Neighborhoods” with images capturing the everyday life of those growing up in the segregated South of the 1960s.

“I was always interested in the depiction of African-American people in positive light, in full light,” Derby said. “This has been one of the things that I’ve done all my life, getting images of African-American people out for other people to see.”

The Department of African-American Student Services and Programs is in the Division of Student Affairs at Georgia State.

For more information on her current exhibit, visit: http://hammondshouse.org/exhibitions.html

Gwinnett: Bright Color Splash and Mediterranean: Two Free Art Exhibits in Suwanee

Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation’s George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center is sponsoring an exhibit of paintings and photography featuring artist Builquis Samadi and photographer Frank Sharp.

Bilquis Samadi’s “Bright Color Splash” features bright, vibrant colorful impressionistic paintings. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, she traveled as a child with her parents to Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Through these travels, Samadi became enriched through the scenery and at the age of 12 attended her first art class and fell in love with painting. Her family moved to the U.S. and she attended Georgia State University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Science and Fine Arts. She now puts her images on canvas through oil, acrylic, pastel and charcoal in order to share with the rest of the world her experiences. “Every time I use a different media, the result is a surprise,” said Samadi. “Whatever crosses my path in daily life somehow ends finding its way to the canvas.” Her paintings are representational with impressionistic uses of color and texture.

Frank Sharp’s “Mediterranean” is comprised of photographs taken during his travels worldwide with his wife Pearl. Sharp was born in East Tennessee near Knoxville and became interested in photography at an early age, using a twin-lens reflective camera. Later, when he graduated from the University of Tennessee, he bought his first 35mm camera. As the years passed his hobby grew, and on a trip to Michigan Frank did a full-page freelance color photo story that was published on the back page of the Detroit Free Press. Frank went on to work on IBM mainframe computers for several Fortune 500 companies. Now, through his travels, he gets to enjoy more freely the passion he has had since childhood.

Both exhibits are currently on display through Aug. 31. Exhibit hours are Mon. – Thurs. 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Fri. 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sat. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission is free.

George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center is located at 55 Buford Hwy. in Suwanee. For more information call 770-831-4173 or visit www.gwinnettparks.com.
