Historic Norcross will be busting with creative artwork and whimsical displays as more than 170 local and national artists line the charming streets at the seventh annual, invitation-only ART FEST October 2 - 3, 2009. The show will open Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. “
Norcross Art Fest is always the fun festival with the colorful personality,” says Frances Schube, ART FEST Co-owner. We have hand-picked the most talented and entertaining artists from around the country in painting, folk art, photography, pottery, jewelry, metalworking and so much more. That means, there’s something for everyone, and the result is the best two-day art event in Gwinnett County.
“This year, we are increasing the artist market, so that festival-goers have more fun art to explore.” Schube, along with her partner, Cindy Flynn of Splash Festivals, also produce the successful Dunwoody Art Festival held on Mother’s Day weekend in the heart of the City of Dunwoody.
The weekend celebration draws crowds of 30,000 – 40,000 annually and will feature continuous jazz, bluegrass and live entertainment on Thrasher Park stage, as well as great food and exciting children’s rides. As a special bonus from the City of Norcross, Friday night, October 1 from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm, the Stephen Lee Band will be playing the blues, and Saturday night, October 2 from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm, and the Beau Hall Band will be singing the blues as well for the crowds. The popular Kidz Zone returns with the lively art pavilion for young artists of all ages to enjoy free arts and crafts projects, and Thrasher Park’s expanded playground is a must-see for youngsters and their parents.
A silent auction filled with decorated chairs by local school students will be waiting for the highest bidders at the Norcross Art Fest “chairs for charity” booth, managed by the Norcross Arts Alliance. Local Historic Norcross boutiques, shops and restaurants will also be open during the event to welcome visitors. Proceeds go to the Norcross Lions Club to be distributed to their wonderful charities. Color Combinations Electrify Georgia Quilt Show
/PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Quilt Show returns to Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia with aisles of color and more than $5,000 in awards. Gwinnett: Bright Color Splash and Mediterranean: Two Free Art Exhibits in Suwanee
Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation’s George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center is sponsoring an exhibit of paintings and photography featuring artist Builquis Samadi and photographer Frank Sharp.
Bilquis Samadi’s “Bright Color Splash” features bright, vibrant colorful impressionistic paintings. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, she traveled as a child with her parents to Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Through these travels, Samadi became enriched through the scenery and at the age of 12 attended her first art class and fell in love with painting. Her family moved to the U.S. and she attended Georgia State University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Science and Fine Arts. She now puts her images on canvas through oil, acrylic, pastel and charcoal in order to share with the rest of the world her experiences. “Every time I use a different media, the result is a surprise,” said Samadi. “Whatever crosses my path in daily life somehow ends finding its way to the canvas.” Her paintings are representational with impressionistic uses of color and texture.
Frank Sharp’s “Mediterranean” is comprised of photographs taken during his travels worldwide with his wife Pearl. Sharp was born in East Tennessee near Knoxville and became interested in photography at an early age, using a twin-lens reflective camera. Later, when he graduated from the University of Tennessee, he bought his first 35mm camera. As the years passed his hobby grew, and on a trip to Michigan Frank did a full-page freelance color photo story that was published on the back page of the Detroit Free Press. Frank went on to work on IBM mainframe computers for several Fortune 500 companies. Now, through his travels, he gets to enjoy more freely the passion he has had since childhood.
Both exhibits are currently on display through Aug. 31. Exhibit hours are Mon. – Thurs. 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Fri. 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sat. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center (YAWAC) is proud to announce Artspalooza. This Saturday series serves to provide teachers, administrators and parents with the opportunity to observe each of Young Audiences’ artists in action in order to better plan in-school arts experiences for the coming school year.
Experience three fun-filled days of interactive activities and performances from more than 30 leading performers in jazz, Latin music, circus arts, world percussion, mime, opera and comedy, all brought to you by Young Audiences at the Woodruff Arts Center, Georgia’s leading provider of arts-in-education programming.
Connect your kids to the arts with paper making; mask building, mural painting and cartooning. Marvel as acclaimed ensemble Tip Tap Two shuffles and time-steps through the history of tap-dance, then watch actor and clown Vince Tortorici play the part of organ-grinding monkey or Enzo the red-nosed fool. Southern Arts Federation Announces Performing Arts Exchange Juried Showcase Performers
Selected through a highly competitive application process, artists will perform for the public and performing arts presenters in September

The Performing Arts Exchange (PAE) is a performing arts marketplace and professional development conference presented annually by the Southern Arts Federation (SAF). It brings together performing artists, artist managers, and performing arts presenters for four days of
artistic expression, networking and booking. Now in its 33rd year, PAE will be held in Norfolk, Va., on September 23-26, 2009. Juried artists’ showcases are free and open to the public at the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center in downtown Norfolk. Showcases feature performances by professional touring artists in music, dance, family/children’s performances and general theater.
The Performing Arts Exchange is presented in partnership with the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and in collaboration with the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and the New England Foundation for the Arts. Twenty-one touring performing arts companies were selected from 157 applicants to participate in the Southern Arts Federation’s Performing Arts Exchange Juried Showcase in September in Norfolk, Va.. Applicants were judged on artistic merit and demonstrated readiness to tour.

Noguchi Playscapes Restoration Unveiling and Rededication
The City of Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs invites the public to join in the unveiling of the newly restored Noguchi Playscapes, located in Piedmont Park. The unveiling will take place Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:00 am. Mayor Franklin will address the attendees, sharing the City’s progress in public art funding and dedication to its parks. The Playscapes was designed by world-renowned artist and sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). Completed in 1976, Playscapes is the only play environment of its kind by Noguchi in the continental United States.

Playscapes is located at the western edge of Piedmont Park, near Piedmont Avenue, just north of the 12th Street entrance. The unveiling ceremony will recognize the completion of the restoration that began in the fall of 2007 and has been managed by the office of Cultural Affairs/ Public Art Program (OCA/PAP). The OCA/PAP hired the conservation teams of Jablonski Berkowitz Conservation, Inc. and Williams Art Conservation, Inc. to restore the Playscapes.
This is an exciting project that took years of planning to complete. Through Opportunity Bond funding we were able to see this project to fruition. It’s good to know that generations of children will be able to enjoy interacting with the Noguchi Playscapes again.

The High Museum raised funds to commission the project and donated the Playscapes to the City of Atlanta once completed. The museum maintained a presence at the site through its Department of Education which conducted classes at the site. The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program has provided stewardship over the Playscapes since the work was gifted. The city of Atlanta is fortunate to have an artwork from such a prominent internationally acclaimed contemporary artist.

Fayette: Artsworks on the Square Pre-Grand Opening
May 15th & 16th the new Artworks on the Square is opening its doors for a Pre-Grand Opening from 10:00 am-6:00 pm on Saturday and 12:00 – 5:00 pm on Sunday. The address is 107 Stonewall Ave (Hwy 54 East) located on the Courthouse Square.
The public is invited to walk along the “Rue de Art” and visit the studios of a wide range of photographers (commercial product, fashion, family, portrait and nature) plus mini-galleries of several artists, web and graphic designers and a videographer. There is also the ArtWorks main Fine Art Gallery featuring award winning art and a wonderful north-lit art classroom with sign-up sheets.

Georgia Commission on the Holocaust Presents Art Exhibit from Georgia Students
The Marcus Jewish Community Center is exhibiting the artwork of the Holocaust Art and Writing contest on the theme of “What Are the Lessons of the Holocaust?” The exhibit runs through May in the Fine Family Art Gallery.
This year marks the fourteenth year for the contest, held in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Education. The contest encouraged Georgia’s middle and high school students may submit artwork and writing entries about the lessons of the Holocaust.

The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust is administratively attached to the Secretary of State’s Office. High to Present Exhibition on Work and Design Process of Atlanta Architect John Portman
“John Portman: Art & Architecture” October 17, 2009 through January 3, 2010
The High Museum of Art will be the sole venue for “John Portman: Art & Architecture,” an exhibition featuring architectural projects, furniture, paintings, and sculpture by Atlanta-based architect and artist John Portman. The fifteen completed and current architectural projects that will be featured span five decades of national and international developments, including the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (1967) that is globally renowned as the first modern atrium hotel. The projects will be presented with large-scale photographs, design plans, elevations, text, articles, and in some cases, architectural models. The exhibition will also feature furniture, paintings and sculpture by Portman—most never before publicly exhibited.
“John Portman: Art & Architecture” is organized by the High Museum of Art, and is curated by Jeffrey Grove, the High’s Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with a major essay by Paul Goldberger, noted historian and Architecture Critic for The New Yorker since 1997. The catalogue will be distributed by the University of Georgia Press and includes a Preface by Grove and contributions from other writers. “John Portman: Art & Architecture” will be on view in the Anne Cox Chambers Wing of the High from October 17, 2009 through January 3, 2010.
“John Portman has not only radically altered the skyline of his home city, Atlanta, but cities throughout the world,” stated Jeffrey Grove, the High’s Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. “His reconsideration of how architecture should function and the experience it should offer visitors completely changed the industry. Early in his career, Portman understood that to realize his vision completely, he must add “Developer” to his role as Architect. All these themes will be addressed in the exhibition.”

“I Dream of Trains” Art Show at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse
Photographs by local artist, Stan Susky, are featured in the Spring/Summer Art Show at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse through July 29. The photography exhibit is entitled “I Dream of Trains.”
“I have always been attracted to the ironies and simple beauty of manmade environments. I try to create order out of chaos and capture hidden elements in objects and everyday places. “, said Susky.
The series of photographs, “I Dream of Trains” is an example of the artists’ sensory interpretation while walking around and through train cars at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia. Each visit for him evoked different memories and sensory perceptions that he has captured in photographs.
Stan is an amateur photographer, but has been pursuing the craft of photography for almost 30 years. Primarily he is self-taught, but has attended and continues to attend various workshops and classes to continually learn both technique and creative visualization.
“I Dream of Trains” will be having an opening with refreshments on Thursday, May 7, 2009 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Gwinnett Historic Courthouse is located at 185 Crogan St., in downtown Lawrenceville. For more information, call 770-822-5450. Exhibit hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.
For people interested in railroads, Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation is also celebrating the railroad for National Train Day at Vines Gardens in Loganville on Saturday, May 9, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Visitors will enjoy touring the beautiful gardens with boardwalks over the lake, gazebos, statuaries and oriental garden. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds.
Volunteer engineers will be holding information sessions on trains and the model train hobby as well as demonstrating the outdoor garden railroad on display at Vines Gardens. The Vines Garden Railroad features a “G” scale model railroad featuring over 1,000 feet of track, 25 foot suspension bridge, tunnels and viaduct, airport, towns and villages.

Gillian Parke and Ronan Peterson exhibit at MudFire Gallery
"Chemistry, anthropology and lots and lots of fire..."
MudFire Gallery welcomes two fantastically-talented ceramicists from the Durham/Chapel Hill area for a deep look into their latest work. Gillian Parke and Ronan Peterson studied chemistry and anthropology respectively, then veered quickly into the world of studio pottery with graduate studies and residencies. They share an almost obsessive interest in building texture and layers of surface treatment to convey content on vessel forms. However, the two use different materials, firing processes, and decorative techniques to achieve their ends.
The Parke-Peterson exhibit promises to take viewers on a fascinating journey, with exceptional depth in which to explore context, innovative technical achievements, and an intriguing pair of aesthetics.
The artist reception and exhibit opening will be held just in time for Mother's Day gift shopping on Saturday, May 9, from 5-9 pm. The exhibit and sale will be on display through May 30, 2009.
ABOUT GILLIAN PARKE
Gillian recently received a 2008 Emerging Artist Award from Ceramics Monthly magazine, and was further selected as the cover artist for her associated profile article. Her work is a study in contrasts, combining the purity of fine porcelain with Shigaraki style feldspar inclusions, stock decals, metallic lusters, and visceral surface treatments. By managing the interaction of these conflicting elements carefully, she unconventionally achieves ceramic surfaces that warrant careful study and ongoing reflection.

MudFire Gallery welcomes two fantastically-talented ceramicists from the Durham/Chapel Hill area for a deep look into their latest work. Gillian Parke and Ronan Peterson studied chemistry and anthropology respectively, then veered quickly into the world of studio pottery with graduate studies and residencies. They share an almost obsessive interest in building texture and layers of surface treatment to convey content on vessel forms. However, the two use different materials, firing processes, and decorative techniques to achieve their ends.
The Parke-Peterson exhibit promises to take viewers on a fascinating journey, with exceptional depth in which to explore context, innovative technical achievements, and an intriguing pair of aesthetics.
The artist reception and exhibit opening will be held just in time for Mother's Day gift shopping on Saturday, May 9, from 5-9 pm. The exhibit and sale will be on display through May 30, 2009.
ABOUT GILLIAN PARKE
Gillian recently received a 2008 Emerging Artist Award from Ceramics Monthly magazine, and was further selected as the cover artist for her associated profile article. Her work is a study in contrasts, combining the purity of fine porcelain with Shigaraki style feldspar inclusions, stock decals, metallic lusters, and visceral surface treatments. By managing the interaction of these conflicting elements carefully, she unconventionally achieves ceramic surfaces that warrant careful study and ongoing reflection.

National Endowment for the Arts Announces Second Round of Grants for FY 2009
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) today announced its second round of funding for fiscal year 2009 in the categories of Access to Artistic Excellence, Learning in the Arts, Arts on Radio and Television, American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius, and Partnership Agreements (State and Regional). In this round of funding, the Arts Endowment will distribute $83,477,100 to support 1,076 projects by nonprofit national, regional, state, and local organizations nationwide.

Alliance Stage Transforms Into Chic, Bohemian Paris Nightclub

The Alliance Theatre ends its milestone 40th season by returning to the elegant and moving sounds of Jacques Brel, presented under the warm glow of candlelight in the style of a Parisian cabaret. Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, one of the most enduring musical revues of all time, is being re-staged on a radically reconfigured Alliance Stage. The addition of two-person tables and four-person, semi-circular booths (banquettes) right on the expanded stage promises a night of shared emotion and romance. Alliance Artistic Director Susan V. Booth will direct the hit musical production where guests can sit back and sip wine in a unique environment styled after a hot French nightspot. Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris is a musical revue that features the music of Jacques Brel, one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. It tells individual stories of love and loss…being young and growing old…living with memories and looking to the future…craving adventure and longing for home. Playing to sold-out houses, the musical broke box office records during its initial off-Broadway run. It was listed as number one on The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s list of the year’s best shows for 2007.
This is the third opportunity Atlanta audiences have had to see Jacques Brel at the Alliance Theatre; the first was in 1972. In order to create an extremely intimate and romantic cabaret experience on the Alliance Stage, the creative team has significantly modified the audience space, eliminating balcony seating, adding on-stage table and semi-circular booth seating, and including a bar service. Additionally, audience members will have the opportunity to purchase a package that includes a four-person booth on stage and a complimentary bottle of wine.
The re-staged show features three cast members from the 2007 production: two local actors Courtenay Collins (Smart Cookie and Managing Maxine) and Craig A. Meyer (SISTER ACT the Musical and Disney’s Aladdin) and Joseph Dellger from New Jersey. Actor Steffi Garrard, from Pennsylvania, is making her debut at the Alliance in this production. The production features the return of Leslie Taylor, set designer; Mariann Verheyen, costume designer; the Alliance Theatre’s Pete Shinn, lighting designer; and the Alliance Theatre’s Clay Benning, sound designer. The music director and player/conductor for this re-staged show will be Robert Strickland.
Performances are Wednesday through Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Apr. 15 – May 10 on the Alliance Stage. There will not be a 2:30 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday, Apr. 18. The May 3 show at 2:30 p.m. will be Audio Described.

The re-staged show features three cast members from the 2007 production: two local actors Courtenay Collins (Smart Cookie and Managing Maxine) and Craig A. Meyer (SISTER ACT the Musical and Disney’s Aladdin) and Joseph Dellger from New Jersey. Actor Steffi Garrard, from Pennsylvania, is making her debut at the Alliance in this production. The production features the return of Leslie Taylor, set designer; Mariann Verheyen, costume designer; the Alliance Theatre’s Pete Shinn, lighting designer; and the Alliance Theatre’s Clay Benning, sound designer. Performances are Wednesday through Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Apr. 15 – May 10 on the Alliance Stage. There will not be a 2:30 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday, Apr. 18. The May 3 show at 2:30 p.m. will be Audio Described.

Works Newly Attributed to Leonardo da Vinci to be Unveiled at High Museum
Recent Restoration of Verrocchio’s Relief for the Silver Altar Led to Findings; Will be Displayed in Atlanta for the First Time Outside of Florence
“Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius” First to Explore Leonardo’s Significant Role in Renaissance Sculpture; Will Feature 20 Drawings by Leonardo
The High will unveil two works newly attributed to Leonardo da Vinci with the opening of “Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius” in October 2009. The recent cleaning of Andrea del Verrocchio’s “Beheading of the Baptist” (1477–1483) relief for the Silver Altar of the Florentine Baptistery has enabled a detailed examination of its individual components, revealing that two of the figures were made very differently than the others. Gary Radke, guest curator of the exhibition and Dean’s Professor of the Humanities at Syracuse University, recently proposed that the two figures, each of which is no more than eight inches high, were created by Leonardo da Vinci and not Verrocchio, who was his teacher. All the figures in the relief were created separately and inserted into the background, allowing for more than one artist to have contributed to the composition.
The new attribution is based on comparisons of the figures in the relief to one another and to similar works by Verrocchio and Leonardo. Two figures, the youth with the salver at the far left and the turbaned officer with a baton seen from the rear on the right, stand out from the other five. Unlike the other figures, which are all posed parallel to the relief plane and chased with insistent linearity, the youth and officer are conceived and modeled with remarkable three-dimensionality and naturalistic detail. As a youth Leonardo was already renowned for his obsessive observation of the world around him, leading Radke to conclude that the two figures were most likely produced by Leonardo just as he was becoming an independent artist.
On view for the first time outside of Florence, the relief will be a focal point of “Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius,” which will provide visitors with the tools to make their own comparisons and learn more about Radke’s rationale for attribution. The exhibition will shed new light on Leonardo’s seminal role in the development of Renaissance sculpture and the work of artists who followed him through an examination of the sculpture that Leonardo studied, the sketches and studies he created for his own sculptural projects (the majority of which were never realized) and his interactions with other Renaissance sculptors.
“Leonardo da Vinci: The Hand of the Genuis” will explore Leonardo’s profound interest in and influence upon sculpture and will feature more than 50 works, including more than 20 sketches and studies by Leonardo, some of which will be on view in the United States for the first time. The exhibition will also feature work by Donatello, Rubens, Verrocchio and Rustici—including Rustici’s three monumental bronzes from the façade of the Baptistery in Florence comprised by “John the Baptist Preaching to a Levite and a Pharisee” (1506–1511), which has never left Florence. Also included are works from world-renowned collections, including that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Musée du Louvre, the British Museum and the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence.
Organized by the High Museum of Art, “Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius” will premiere in Atlanta October 3, 2009, and will be on view through February 21, 2010. A modified version of the exhibition will travel to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles (March 23 through June 20, 2010).
“Proposing a new attribution to Leonardo is not something I take lightly,” said Radke, “but when I saw the relief after it was recently cleaned and had the privilege of looking at the figures from both front and back, two of them jumped out at me. Verrocchio, who was Leonardo’s teacher, was a great artist and mentor, but these figures stand apart from the others. They are brilliantly posed and extraordinarily modeled down to the last detail. They pay homage to a very special teacher/student relationship and collaboration, recalling the presence of Leonardo’s splendid angel kneeling in the foreground of Verrocchio’s ‘Baptism of Christ.’”
The High has partnered with a number of Italian museums and institutions in the past, including the Casa Buonarroti, the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, the restoration laboratories of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure and the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, from which the silver relief comes. Some of these collaborations have resulted in conservation and new scholarship, and many have brought renowned works of art to Atlanta. The restoration of the Silver Altar from the Florentine Baptistery and the ensuing discovery of new Leonardo works follows the High’s 2007 exhibition of Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise from Florence. As part of extensive scientific and art historical collaborations in preparation for the exhibition, the High helped to fund the restoration of the Silver Altar, which originally stood inside the Florentine Baptistery for which Ghiberti’s Gates were made.

Newnan Students Take Top Art Prizes
U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland congratulates Newnan High School senior Jasmine Thrasher on winning the 2009 3rd Congressional District art competition with her painting “Study of Light.” Another Newnan senior, Madison Welch, finished second with her artwork titled “Frosted Berries.”
“This is a repeat performance for Newnan High School and art teacher Jodi Hobbs,” Westmoreland said. “Our winner this year, Jasmine, finished second last year behind Ms. Hobbs’ daughter Anna. There’s obviously an excellent program at Newnan, with exemplary teaching and talented, hard-working students.
“Every year, I’m amazed at the depth of artistic talent that we have in the 3rd District,” Westmoreland continued. “We’re lucky to have a distinguished panel of judges and I don’t envy their task of choosing between so many great works – we had 68 entries overall. But at the end of the day, we could only have one winner and I’m proud of Jasmine for making yet another strong showing and coming away with the blue ribbon.”
Westmoreland gave special thanks to the judges: Bette Hickman of Newnan (executive director of Global Achievers), Vicki Turner of Fayetteville (director of advertising/marketing for AIS Computers), Mark Lucas of Columbus (Lucas Studios of Art) and Tim Williams of Greystone Power in Douglasville.
Jasmine’s “Study of Light” will hang in the U.S. Capitol for year, joining a gallery of winners from each congressional district. This summer, Jasmine will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington for the unveiling ceremony courtesy of a generous gift from Georgia EMC. The top three finishers will also receive scholarship offers from the Savannah School of Art and Design and the Atlanta Art Institute. Third place went to Fayette County High School freshman Caleb Brown, for his pencil sketch of football players battling it out on the gridiron.
