Wild Ocean shows at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. through March 26, 2010. The film plunges audiences into an underwater feeding frenzy off the coast of South Africa to witness an epic struggle for survival. Whales, sharks, dolphins, seals, gannets and billions of fish collide during one of nature’s greatest migration spectacles.
Van Gogh: Brush with Genius and The Old Man and the Sea combine for a special double-feature with shows at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. through March 31, 2010. Audiences will see some of the greatest works of art come to life on the big screen in Van Gogh. Then, they’ll experience Hemmingway’s classic story told through stunning animation of the Academy Award®‐winning film The Old Man and the Sea.

Central GA Shutterbugs Meeting Jan 12
Regular monthly meetings of the West Central Georgia Shutterbugs will resume on Tuesday, January 12th, 6:30 p.m., at the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop.

High Hosts 14th Annual High Arts Day
The High Museum of Art will host the 14th Annual High Arts Day on Monday, November 16, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. High Arts Day is a fundraiser presented by Art Partners, the social and volunteer organization at the High. The day’s events will include a reception and private shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, a luncheon at the High, home tours, exhibition tours, a trunk show and a sculpture auction. Tickets are $150 ($80 tax-deductible) and all proceeds benefit the High. For ticketing information please contact the Art Partners Program Officer at 404-733-4429.

Mayor Shirley Franklin to Take Part in the Celebration of the Re-dedication of New Endings in Freedom Park
Artist Diane Kempler to address exciting new location of public art
On Thursday, October 22, Mayor Shirley Franklin, the City of Atlanta, and the Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art division are hosting the rededication of Diane Kempler’s New Endings. The dedication ceremony starts at 11:30 am. New Endings is now located in Freedom Park at Euclid and North Avenues.
New Endings was commissioned in 1996 by the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta, prior to the Olympic Games. The artwork celebrates both the natural environment and the emergence of the City of Atlanta.
“New Endings has a new beginning in its new home in Freedom Park. This new location gives a fresh start and access to a new and different audience. I hope the neighbors in the Freedom Park community enjoy it,” said artist Diane Kempler.
“We have been privileged to work with Central Atlanta Progress and Diane Kempler to find a wonderful home for this treasured artwork. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work that the Offices of Parks and Park Design dedicated to the project. The setting is beautiful,” said Camille Russell Love, Director of the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs.
Diane Kempler has been a professor of ceramics at Emory University since 1997. Kempler received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA and studied at Penland School of Craft in Penland, NC. Kempler’s work has been exhibited in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast. Her work can be found in the collections of Museum of Contemporary Art in Atlanta, GA, American Craft Museum in New York City, and Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. As an artist, Kempler is interested in the dualities of life, such as beginnings and endings, and the ongoing dialogue that they create in the world around us. New Endings is her only public artwork in Atlanta, Georgia.
The City of Atlanta’s Public Art Program worked with the artist and Central Atlanta Progress to relocate this artwork to a location that best suited both parties. In addition to New Endings, there will be several other new art installations around the city this fall.

ArtPerks Cafe Opens at ArtWork on the Square, Fayetteville
The historic square in Fayetteville has a new and very unique cafe offering pastries, coffee and chocolates. It is the ArtPerks Café and it is inside the new art galleria known as ArtWorks on the Square.
While enjoying just plain good dark roast and medium roast coffee, you can buy used books for 25 cents or go exploring the hallways of art studios filled with gifts and treasures for every budget. Or you can visit the main art gallery and look in on art lessons.
The owner, Kathaleen Brewer, is linking up with other local small businesses, such as City Café and O’Chocolate in Peachtree City in order to provide local goodies for local people and to support each other. She will be offering limited boxed lunches by City Café for people on the go.
Brewer would also like to invite poets and writers to organize readings.
The grand opening for the café is Friday, Oct. 2nd 10:00 am until 9:00 pm.

The Colorful Arts Society Inc. to Host its Tenth Annual Fundraiser Gala and Scholarship Awards Program
The Colorful Arts Society, Inc. (CAS) ColorfulArtsSociety.org, a nonprofit arts organization supporting the metro-Atlanta area, will host its Tenth Annual Fundraiser Gala Concert and Scholarship Awards Program on Sunday, October 18, 2009. The event will be held at 4:00 PM at The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. This year’s theme is Unforgettable Hollywood.
The evening will begin with the silent auction and artist market reception, from which proceeds will help to fund the organization’s scholarship program and year-round calendar of cultural events. Scheduled to perform during the fundraiser are 2009 Grammy nominee, Wayna, as well as The Joe Gransden Sextet.
Tickets to the Gala are $60.00 and may be purchased from any CAS member or online at colorfulartssociety.org
This year’s scholarship category is Spoken Word, which is a form of literary arts or artistic performance, in which lyrics, poetry or stories are spoken, rather than sung; and are performed with a musical background or props. To enter this scholarship competition, applicants should submit an up-to-five minute 'spoken word' performance on a DVD, along with an application form, which can be obtained online at colorfulartssociety.org. The DVD and application must be received no later than 5pm, September 25th, 2009. Performances will be judged by a panel of judges.

This year’s scholarship category is Spoken Word, which is a form of literary arts or artistic performance, in which lyrics, poetry or stories are spoken, rather than sung; and are performed with a musical background or props. To enter this scholarship competition, applicants should submit an up-to-five minute 'spoken word' performance on a DVD, along with an application form, which can be obtained online at colorfulartssociety.org. The DVD and application must be received no later than 5pm, September 25th, 2009. Performances will be judged by a panel of judges.

Isakson Living Announces Partnership with Alliance Theatre
Peachtree Hills Place and Park Springs to sponsor COME FLY WITH ME
Isakson Living, the developer of premiere Atlanta retirement communities, Park Springs and Peachtree Hills Place announces a partnership with the Alliance Theatre for its upcoming performance, COME FLY WITH ME, a dance musical featuring the sounds of Frank Sinatra. Previews begin September 15, 2009 at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre. The show opens September 23 and runs through October 11.

The musical, conceived, directed and choreographed by Tony Award® Winner; Twyla Tharp celebrates the love and life of four couples over one night falling in and out of love. By special arrangement with Frank Sinatra Enterprises and The Sinatra Family, COME FLY WITH ME features original recorded “masters” of Frank Sinatra’s voice – arguably one of the most recognized voices in the history of music – backed by a live on-stage Big Band. The show’s score combines newly discovered vocal performances from the Sinatra archives along with signature arrangements of some of his most famous work. The majority of music is comprised of songs from The Great American Song Book, composed by the likes of Irving Berlin, Cy Coleman, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Richard Rodgers and Jimmy Van Heusen.

Main Street Newnan’s Fall Art Walk This Friday
First of Series of Fall Events
Main Street Newnan will welcome Fall with its highly anticipated annual Fall Art Walk on Friday, September 18th from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. in downtown Newnan this Friday.
Artists from Newnan and the surrounding area will have their collectable, quality artwork on display in many downtown stores. Many artists will also be available to answer questions and discuss the artwork. Flint Gallery of Panoply, 16 Greenville Street, is the starting point of the Art Walk. Maps, refreshments and the entertainment will be available all over the square.
Over twenty different locations will be participating in the Art Walk. Martha Ann Parks of Flint Gallery of Panoply is one of the founders of the Art Walk. Flint Gallery features over thirty artists but will be hosting a full display of artist Jeff Surace for the Fall Art Walk. Mr. Surace graduated cum laude from Savannah College of Art and Design and has work displayed in galleries throughout Savannah, Atlanta, New York and Tokyo. He specializes in defining landscapes within his own terms and will be on hand Friday night to meet guests and answer questions. Equally engaging will be the works of our local art program from Newnan High School displayed at R.S. Mann Jewelers. The best young artists from the program will have the opportunity to display their art and be on hand to interpret it for guests.
All types of mediums will be addressed. For example, Sharon Petersen will be demonstrating her unique body art at The Costume Shop and Ellie Farrington with oil and acrylic paintings at Esspresso Lane. Fine Lines Art and Framing will feature multiple artists including the owner, Cecilia Hilton. “This is a wonderful evening in downtown Newnan. We enjoy the opportunity to entertain customers in our shop and display not only our artwork but that of other talented artists.” Fine Lines will also be displaying Thomas Rowe, Nathan Kosiba and Lindsay Goodson. Moji’s, a new restaurant in downtown will feature photography by Coral Stavros and Brent Walker as well as eclectic bird feeders by Wanda Kirk. Two Turtle Doves will welcome Bob Comeans doing caricatures as well as painter Linda Naes and Vintage Flea will feature their own Valerie Dumas and Jenny Horn. Don’t miss Carolyn Cary, founder of the gorgeous “Nutty Girl” nut line and accomplished artist who will be featured at the Other Side of the Moon.
Newnan and Coweta County is full of accomplished artists, many of which will be featured the evening of the art walk. Main Street will be working in close collaboration with the Newnan Coweta Art Association to feature these local artists. Espresso Lane serves as the home gallery for the NCAA. Ellie Farrington will be the featured artist for the evening at Espresso Lane while Jenny Jones will be at Quiznos, the Boyds at Redneck, Betty Bowen at Let Them Eat Toffee and Ann Lynn Whitesides at Two Sisters Knitting Nook.

New Fernbank Photography Exhibition Shines Golden Light on Georgia through Artistic Eyes of Students
A new photography exhibition commissioned by Fernbank Museum of Natural History reveals Georgia’s golden history through the work of students at Atlanta’s Portfolio Center. Georgia’s Heart of Gold features 41 photographs that showcase gold’s local and historic influence—from modern-day gold panners to distinguished gold medal winners, from gold records to gold “grillz,” and from Dahlonega’s gold mines to the State Capitol’s gold dome.
Georgia’s Heart of Gold, on view from September 26, 2009-January 3, 2010, was created through a partnership between Fernbank Museum and the Portfolio Center to complement the Museum’s presentation of GOLD, a separate exhibition that combines golden artifacts, nuggets, jewelry and awards to explore the cultural significance and historical fascination with this enduring symbol of wealth, power and beauty. Georgia’s Heart of Gold highlights the diverse work of seven students and includes close-ups, black-and-whites, action shots, panoramics, worm's-eye views, bird's-eye views and more. Medals, metals, grillz, pans, buildings, musicians, jewelry—the images cover the full spectrum.
After being approached with this novel idea by alumnus James Hays of Fernbank Museum, Jerry Burns of The Portfolio Center organized a new class to create a museum-quality exhibition while providing a rich learning opportunity for the students. Structured as though students were pitching a story about gold in Georgia to a magazine, the class attacked the project with intensive brainstorming and hands-on research ranging from the historical to the whimsical, from pop culture to deeply-rooted tradition. The students delved into the hills, cities and homes of Georgia to capture their story. Now, Fernbank visitors can peek into this window of Georgia culture and see the beauty, intrigue and importance of gold in our region.
“This exhibition is special because it looks deeply into the cultural aspect of gold and how people in Georgia have interacted with it,” said Hays, Fernbank’s Vice President of Exhibitions. “For instance, our visitors will see an amazing gold coin minted in Dahlonega well over a hundred years ago in the exhibition GOLD, and on our walls they will see photographs of modern gold prospectors panning for gold in Dahlonega. It’s interesting to imagine that a similar prospector, knee-deep in a river before the Civil War, may have contributed a nugget to make the coin.”
The students are eager to see their hard work on display at the museum, something many photographers dream of for decades yet something these students were able to achieve through Fernbank before they reached graduation.
“To see my work up on the walls of a museum means a lot to me. It is the fruition of a lot of hard work and the culmination of years of gaining knowledge and confidence as a photographer,” said Portfolio Center student Chris Low. “This exhibit is sort of an introduction as a photographer to the city of Atlanta, and an amazing exit from Portfolio Center. It may be the only time I hang in a museum so I plan on soaking it up and really enjoying it while it lasts.”
The photographs in Georgia’s Heart of Gold correspond with the objects visitors will encounter in GOLD and help further the story of Georiga’s history with gold, offering personal stories to the artifacts, awards and gold specimens in the galleries.
The photographs of Artem Nazarov and Leigh Anna Thompson focus on the allure of finding gold in Georgia. Nazarov includes portraits of residents who remain fascinated by the treasures found in Georgia, from golden Civil War treasures, to nuggets found in gold mines, to the glow of the State Capitol building, topped with gold mined in Georgia. Thompson features members of the Lost Dutchman Mining Association, an organization focused on prospecting and mining for gold. Her series of photographs reveal the continued search for golden treasures in Georgia and the site of the first gold to be found here.
Justin Keoninh and Courtney Lankford embrace the cultural fascination with gold. Keoninh documented Georgia’s gold grill industry of removable gold teeth, a trend that first started with the hip-hop industry in the 1980s and continues today. Lankford showcases what gold means to individuals through cultural tradition and personal style.
Emily Dryden, Chris Low and Nathan Stoan reveal gold’s prestige through portraits and action shots of Georgians who have been awarded gold for their achievements. Dryden features the pride of several award-winning athletes and a decorated Navy veteran. Low recognizes gold medal winners from the Olympic Games, Special Olympics and Paralympics. Stoan highlights Georgia’s golden touch on the music industry through a series of portraits of local musicians.
“This was an invaluable experience for our students,” said Jerry Burns, Creative Director of Photography at the Portfolio Center. “They learned the power of narrative, the ethics of documentary work, how to seize that decisive moment, and how to work under deadline. Best of all, they were given the opportunity to showcase their work in a national museum.”

2009 Westobou Festival Sept 17 - 26
The 2009 Westobou Festival, September 17 – 26, celebrates excellence in the arts and will feature performances by local, regional, and nationally-recognized artists. Performances, including dance, music, theater and visual arts, are taking place in downtown Augusta, at Augusta State University and Paine College, and in North Augusta, S. C.
Each day and evening of the Festival will be filled with a variety of presentations designed to dazzle visitors and showcase Augusta’s wealth of artistic talent. Atlanta Artists and Arts Organizations Invited to Apply for Funding through Contracts for Arts Services
The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, a division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, is pleased to announce that the deadline for 2009 - 2010 Contracts for Arts Services applications is September 30, 2009.

Call for Art for Artists with Disabilities
Georgia Artists with Disabilities (GAD) is holding an exhibition in the Georgia Power Building located at 241 Ralph McGill Boulevard Sept. 14-26th. GAD was founded by the Pilot Clubs of Metropolitan Atlanta in 1985. These clubs are members of Pilot International, a global organization of business leaders dedicated to improving the quality of life in their local communities and throughout the world. Applications are available at ArtWorks on the Square, 107 Stonewall Ave., Fayetteville. The deadline for hand delivered work is Sept 12th, 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Kathaleen Brewer, director of Artworks, was chosen as one of their panel judges.

“Salaam Bombay,” Friday, September 11, 8 p.m., Rich Theatre
Before “Slumdog Millionaire” won a king’s ransom of Oscars, Mira Nair (“Monsoon Wedding”) captured the teeming streets of Bombay and the lives of its forgotten children in her much acclaimed debut feature “Salaam Bombay.” The story of Krishna, who works as a tea boy, and the improvised family he creates with a pimp, a prostitute, and a bunch of other strays who share the alley where he sleeps, “Salaam Bombay” owes its authenticity to Nair’s background as a documentary filmmaker. Praised by Leslie Camhi in the Village Voice for “the toughness and vitality” of its “perfect” cast (made up of both established Indian stars and non-professionals), the film won the Audience Award at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. (India, 1988, 113 minutes.) In Hindi and English with subtitles.
“Conflict”/ “Samar,” Saturday, September 12, 8 p.m., Rich Theatre
Shyam Benegal, a director lauded for pioneering a “middle cinema” between commercial Bollywood and art-house fare, made this darkly comedic drama about the persistence of caste and the different ways its inequities are viewed by rural folks and urban sophisticates. Using a film-with-a film structure, Benegal tells the story of a real-life conflict and of a movie crew who have arrived on location to create a fictionalized version of the events. The story is set in a Madhya Pradesh village where tensions over the use of a well by both “untouchables” and others sparks protests. Violence ensues after a local landowner, furious at the poor for their rebellion, tries keeping them from their fields and starving them. In The Times of India, writer R. Sengupta praised “Samar’s multilayered treatment, which allows Benegal to critique, comment, satirize, and sympathize.” The film won India’s National Film Award for Best Film. (India, 1999, 126 minutes.) In Hindi with subtitles.

Fall College Night Celebrates "Louvre Atlanta"
8/12/09 The High will host a fall College Night on Saturday, September 12, from 7 p.m. to 12 midnight. The event coordinates with the final weekend of “Louvre Atlanta,” the High’s unprecedented three-year collaboration with the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The final exhibition, “The Louvre and the Masterpiece,” explores the definition of a masterpiece and features ninety-one works of art—spanning 4,000 years—drawn from all eight of the Louvre’s collection areas.
In addition to live musical performances by DJ Tabone, Tealights and Jimi Cravity, students and visitors will enjoy a night of gallery viewing, do-it-yourself craft workshops with Jen Morris and Cristina Vidal of Young Blood Gallery & Boutique, drawing in the galleries and a showing of the film “The City of the Louvre.” Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
College Night will also offer the special opportunity to participate in the High’s collaboration with the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on the Mel Chin “Fundred Dollar Bill Project.” This project is raising national awareness of the problem of lead pollution in New Orleans through the production of “FUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS”—original interpretations of U.S. one-hundred-dollar bills hand-drawn by school children and community members across the country. In addition to live musical performances by DJ Tabone, Tealights and Jimi Cravity, students and visitors will enjoy a night of gallery viewing, do-it-yourself craft workshops with Jen Morris and Cristina Vidal of Young Blood Gallery & Boutique, drawing in the galleries and a showing of the film “The City of the Louvre.” Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
College Night will also offer the special opportunity to participate in the High’s collaboration with the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on the Mel Chin “Fundred Dollar Bill Project.” This project is raising national awareness of the problem of lead pollution in New Orleans through the production of “FUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS”—original interpretations of U.S. one-hundred-dollar bills hand-drawn by school children and community members across the country. The High Museum of Art, founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, is the leading art museum in the southeastern United States. With more than 11,000 works of art in its permanent collection, the High Museum of Art has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American and decorative art; significant holdings of European paintings; a growing collection of African American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, photography and African art. Discover Creative Georgia
Locally produced crafts, arts and performances showcase communities across the state
Get to the heart of Georgia’s communities through their creative cultures and indigenous arts. Discover the people and places that make communities unique: potters, artists, theatres and galleries that allow visitors to take home a piece of Georgia.
Travel to northeast Georgia to experience a tradition that has been around for more than 100 years of handmade pottery. The Northeast Georgia Folk Pottery Museum in Sautee and the Mark of the Potter in nearby Clarkesville will shed some light on this fascinating folk tradition that has served both functional and artistic purposes over generations. Both locations sell pottery, detail the tradition’s history and feature one-of-a-kind “face jugs” handmade pieces that don eyes, a nose, a mouth, ears and curious facial expressions. Learn to make your own pottery at Etowah River Pottery in Dahlonega, or discover gourd-inspired pottery at The Gourd Place, also in Sautee. Also, don’t miss the Hambidge Fifth Annual Georgia Pottery Show near Clayton, where more than 30 Georgia potters will have their work on display until Sept. 8.
Blue Ridge also offers a variety of places for arts enthusiast to visit. Turning Leaf Wood Art and Twigs to Furniture carry decorative and functional handmade wooden pieces made by local artisans, and Fishbone Studio features mosaic work from local artist Betty Wassmer. Another must-see is the ironwork of blacksmith John Beatie on display at the Beatie Blacksmith Gallery in Mineral Bluff. Also, be sure to check out a performance at the Blue Ridge Community Theater, which has “The Fantasticks” and “A Christmas Carol” among its scheduled performances for 2009.
For other community theater productions in Georgia, visit the Winder Cultural Arts Center in Winder for comedies “The Curious Savage” and “Bus Stop” in 2009 or the Waycross Area Community Theatre in Waycross, which is performing “Little Shop of Horrors” and “The Sound of Music” in the coming year. The Tater Patch Players in Jasper will perform the musical comedy “Smoke on the Mountain,” which follows a family of gospel singers during the Depression of the 1930s. Theaters across the state also tell Georgia-crafted stories. Georgia’s Official Folk Life Play, “Swamp Gravy”, for example, offers a newly written story performed each year in Colquitt based on real life stories of community members. The latest production of Swamp Gravy is scheduled for October. The middle Georgia town of Lyons also recounts local history every year in its production of “Tales from the Altamaha,” based on the writings of a local attorney and businessman, Col. Thomas Ross Sharpe, who lived there between the 1940s and 1960s. The productions are held in the spring at the Blue Marquee Theater in Lyons.
West of Lyons in Buena Vista is another essential visit for Georgia arts lovers: Pasaquan, a seven-acre arts site that includes six major structures, concrete sculptures and painted walls designed by eccentric Georgia-born artist Eddie Owens Martin. A visit will detail the artist’s vision and his relationship with the South and spirituality. Another inspirational arts site is Paradise Gardens, a four-acre property designed by Southern Baptist minister and folk artist Howard Finster. The site includes Mr. Finster’s gardens, a museum, a folk art chapel and the Finster Folk Art Gallery.
Several Atlanta hotels introduce visitors to the work of Georgia artists. The St. Regis Hotel and the W Atlanta-Buckhead hotel, both in Buckhead, exhibit works from local artists and photographers. The Whitlock Inn in Marietta and the recently remodeled Georgian Terrace in Midtown also showcase pieces by local artists and scenes of local events. Paintings in the restaurant of the Georgian Terrace, for example, commemorate the premiere gala of “Gone With the Wind,” which was held at the hotel in 1939.
Visiting local galleries is another great way to see Georgia-made art. The Seen Gallery in Decatur recently featured Georgia artist James Dean, who has garnered a following for his paintings of “Pete the Cat,” a little blue cat depicted in a variety of scenes. The Joseph House Art Gallery in Columbus also features work from local artists including watercolors, oil paintings and art glass. Gallery RFD in Swainsboro is a non-profit that encourages business development through the arts and features exhibitions from local artists. The Soda Shop Gallery in Sylvania and The Gallery in Savannah also showcase Georgia-made work. Not far from Savannah is another arts must-see that chronicles the cultural history of African-Americans along the Georgia Coast, the Ogechee Kunda Cultural Center in Riceboro. A living museum that carries local and African art, the center profiles the history and arts of Gullah culture in Georgia.

Woodruff Arts Center Receives $12 Million Award to Expand the Center's Pre-K through 12 Arts Education Programming
Grant Will Help Center Develop, Grow, and Expand Education Programming for Students and Teachers Throughout the State of Georgia
The Woodruff Arts Center today announced that it has been awarded a $12 million grant from The Goizueta Foundation over the next three years to expand the educational programs, resources, and services that it provides to pre-K through 12th grade students throughout Georgia. The grant will serve to enhance and increase participation in existing programs that already serve more than one million students annually, and will support the development of new initiatives.
“This is a groundbreaking gift that catapults the Woodruff Arts Center’s future development and our ability to serve the children of Georgia,” said Joseph R. Bankoff, the Center’s President and CEO. “The Goizueta Foundation’s generous gift will help us address increasing demand for arts education programs that help improve academic achievement across all disciplines. It is our hope that their generosity inspires other corporations, foundations, and individuals to join us in this vital mission.”
The Strategic Plan which the Woodruff Arts Center Board approved in May of 2008 calls for the center to play an even greater role in education in the coming decades. A focal point of this planning was to unify and build upon education programs being implemented by the Center’s constituent institutions: the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art, and Young Audiences. The Center also recently developed a Master Plan to guide the future development of its campus, including new facilities for education programming. The campus-wide education initiatives, which will be funded by the grant, build upon the successful programs pioneered by each of the Center’s individual institutions. By sharing resources, pooling the talent and expertise of our best and brightest, and capitalizing on programming efficiencies, the Center will enrich the lives of more Georgians than ever before.
Emphasizing the breadth, depth, and creativity of programs already in place on campus, several of the initiatives that will be funded by the grant were individually prototyped by the constituent organizations. Among the initiatives to be supported are:
- The Georgia Center for Professional Learning in the Arts: An expanded professional development program which will train teaching artists to partner with classroom teachers to use the arts as a tool to stimulate learning in the core curriculum, sparking the imaginations of students, and enhancing academic achievement.
- Pre-K through 12 Arts Education for the 21st Century: A comprehensive approach to arts education that links the existing and future artistic and educational initiatives of the Center’s four divisions with each other and with Georgia Department of Education K-12 Performance standards through school curriculum development assembly programs, classroom residencies, in-school concerts and performances, and more.
- Out-of-School Programming Initiative for Middle and High School Students: The Center will provide critical opportunities for the cultural enrichment of youth through after-school, evening, and weekend programs; arts leadership programs; summer camps; and online courses.
- Engagement and Community-Access Programs: The Woodruff Arts Center believes that arts and education should be available and accessible to all citizens. The grant will help the Center continue its commitment to develop talent and encourage participation from all communities and offer opportunities for children to experience the arts that might not otherwise have the exposure.
- Expanded Programming for Families: Recognizing that families experience a variety of cultural activities together, the Center will expand its family-oriented programming campus-wide, across visual and performing arts disciplines.
The Woodruff Arts Center’s education programs and initiatives reflect the vision and commitment of the Board of Trustees’ Education Task Force, members of which include prominent educators Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, President of Spelman College; William Clarkson, President of The Westminster Schools; Dr. Elizabeth Kiss, President of Agnes Scott College; and Dr. James Wagner, President of Emory University. Other Education Task Force members from the Center’s Board include artist, philanthropist, and education advocate Usher Raymond IV; attorney Christopher Marquardt; and, philanthropists and community volunteers Carolyn C. McClatchey and Vicki Palmer.
