Celebrate the arts this Spring at Callaway Gardens Plein Air Paint Out, Art Show and Sale. Of 49 artists who applied to participate in the 2011 Plein Air, 33 artists from around the United States have been selected for the juried event by William U. During the week of April 10, 2011, these the artists will spend time painting the beauty they see at Callaway Gardens as well as other public and private gardens in the region, including Columbus, LaGrange, Newnan, and Atlanta. Their works of art will be submitted on Friday and judged by Awards Judge Jean Stern, executive director of The Irvine Museum of Irvine California. That evening the pieces will be featured at a Collectors Preview Reception at the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center. Cocktail attire is appropriate. Tickets and can be purchased by calling 706-663-5096. For each ticket purchased, a one-time credit of the face value can be applied to the purchase of one piece of artwork the evening of April 15th.
The public is invited to participate in a fun and exciting Quick Draw event in downtown Pine Mountain the morning of Saturday, April 16, 2011. During the Quick Draw event, participants pay a small registration fee. Artists have only two hours to create a painting in a specified setting. At the end of two hours, the pieces are submitted, judged for cash awards, and immediately go on sale to the public. Details are available at www.callawaygardens.com/pleinair.
The art will be on display in the Callaway Discovery Center for Gardens visitors to view and purchase Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April is a beautiful time to visit Callaway Gardens and enjoy the color of Spring throughout the Gardens. Celebrate Spring! admission is $25 per adult and $12.50 per child age six to 12. Children five and younger are admitted to the Gardens for free.
For those who want to become a Plein Air artist or to simply improve their skills, renowned artist Greg LaRock will offer a three-day class, April 18-20, 2011, perfect for anyone who has a basic understanding of how to set up their easel, working with materials perspective and some drawing ability. LaRock’s classes will include location demonstrations; individual instruction at each student’s easel; plenty of painting time for students; group critiques at the end of each day; personal critiques of student’s work brought from home; and take away items. Registration is $425 per student. Lodging at Callaway Gardens is available. New Art Group Hosts Charity Art Show February 5, 2011
Skip the roses and chocolate this year - choose a one-of-a-kind work of art or fine craft for your sweetheart and give to a worthy cause at the same time. Join members of Fine Arts And Crafts Entrepreneurs (FAACE) on Saturday, February 5th from 10am-4pm, when “Art With Heart” debuts in downtown Fayetteville.
Members and friends of FAACE will showcase paintings, pottery, jewelry, and fiber art – a perfect mix of gifts for Valentine’s Day. The show will benefit The Children’s Village at Christian City through donations at the door.
FAACE is a new art group focusing on the ‘business of art’. Janet McGregor Dunn, Susan Norton, Kathy Schultz, Vicki Turner, Angela White, and Claudia Wood began the group late last year with the idea of helping fellow artists become more successful. In addition to hosting shows and providing art venue information for members, FAACE will hold informative meetings designed to foster better business practices and growth. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Towne Club Center in Peachtree City. Fine artists and crafters in the Southern Crescent area are welcome. Membership details can be found on the FAACE website, www.FAACE.org.

New Plein Air Art Show and Sale at Callaway Gardens April 17
To benefit the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, Callaway Gardens® is hosting a new and very unique Plein Air Art Show and Sale on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 7 p.m.
While visiting art events in Laguna Beach, California, and meeting experts such as Jean Stern, director of the Irvine Museum, and other notable California artists, Edward Callaway was inspired to create something new at Callaway Gardens, an art event unlike any other in our region - a Plein Air Art Show and Sale. Plein Air, French for “open air,” is used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
“We have invited 24 notable plein air artists from across the United States to come here and capture the beauty of Spring,” said Callaway, chairman of the board for the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, the non-profit parent organization that owns and operates Callaway Gardens. “The artists will arrive a week before the event and spend time painting the beauty they see at Callaway Garden as well as other public and private gardens in the region, including Columbus, LaGrange and Atlanta. These paintings will be submitted on Friday to be viewed and purchased Saturday night.”
In the early 19th century paint manufacturers made available, for the first time, pre-mixed oil pigments in easily carried tubes. Armed with an easily transferable medium, painters took their newly minted paint tubes and easels outdoors. The ability to paint directly from nature opened the door to the Impressionist movement and Barbizon school.
Impressionist artists were interested in the influence of changing outdoor light on a color. Painting real life and naturalistic scenes, they focused on form as color that suggested light. Leaving behind formulas and static scenes, these plein air painters tested out the theory of trusting their eyes to portray the truth in nature.
Building on the work of the realists and impressionists, modern plein air artists are experiencing a renaissance. Callaway Gardens is proud to partner with these artists as they draw their audience into a greater appreciation of the natural world. Invited artists include:

Popular Art Show, Sale Returns to Carrollton December 5
Calling all art lovers and artists. Come celebrate the winter holidays with the second annual “Good Things Come in Small Packages” show and sale.
The exhibit will feature artwork for sale from UWG faculty, students, alumni and community residents from Friday, Dec. 5, to Thursday, Dec. 11. An Opening Party will celebrate the event on Friday, Dec. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. The party and show is free and the community is invited to attend.
Submissions of up to three works of art no larger than 12” x 12” x 12” can be made by artists for “Good Things Come in Small Packages” at the Main Gallery in the Humanities Building on Wednesday, Dec. 3, and Thursday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Space is available on a first come, first serve basis until the gallery is filled. The specified size can be framed or unframed with the unframed work hung on the wall by pins.
Stephanie Smith, instructor of art and coordinator of the Gallery exhibits, said last year’s exhibit sold out.
“In these tough economic times, making the choice to support local artists and buying something handmade and unique is a powerful statement,” said Smith. “Giving handmade items is a gift from the heart.”
Last December, the Main Gallery was filled with a an eclectic range of works including oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, photography, charcoal, pencil and ink drawings, ceramics, mixed media, printmaking and sculpture.
“This exhibition is an opportunity for students, faculty and the local art community alike to exhibit their work side by side,” said Smith. “We can share in their ideas and their inspiration.”
