Anthony Ames, Architect: Residential Landscapes
April 11- August 23, 2009
This exhibition of twenty-six paintings, eight architectural models and one dinnerware set by nationally recognized Atlanta-based architect Anthony Ames will showcase pieces from nearly three decades of work, beginning in 1980, and examine Ames’s role as a Late Modernist architect. The exhibition of twenty-six paintings will showcase Anthony Ames’ interest in the two-dimensional depiction of three-dimensional space, decorative patterns, color relationships and narrative references. Eight architectural models will reflect Ames’ interest in the construction of three-dimensional form and space, as well as the influence of the architectural designs of Le Corbusier, Giuseppe Terragni and Richard Meier. The dinnerware piece will showcase the modernist design of the dinnerware set from the High’s collection which was inspired by purist “object-types” such as bottle, pitcher, plate and egg.
Evolution: Five Decades of Printmaking by David C. Driskell
April 21–August 2, 2009
One of the world’s leading authorities on the subject of African American art, Professor David C. Driskell has made invaluable contributions to scholarship in the history of art and the role of the African American artist in American society. “Evolution” is presented in conjunction with the fifth anniversary of the High’s David C. Driskell Prize, and will feature 80 prints that will provide insight into Driskell’s artistic process and development. This exhibition is organized by the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Louvre Atlanta: The Louvre and the Masterpiece
Through September 6, 2009
In the final year of “Louvre Atlanta,” this exhibition explores how the definition of a “masterpiece,” as well as taste and connoisseurship, has changed over time. The exhibition features ninety-one works of art drawn from all eight of the Musée du Louvre’s collection areas, spanning 4,000 years. Paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and drawings reflect three major themes: the changing historical and cultural definitions of a masterpiece, authenticity and connoisseurship, and the evolution of taste and scholarship. Highlights include Jan Vermeer’s “The Astronomer” and George de la Tour’s “Card Sharp,” as well as drawings and prints by Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Dürer. In addition, several themes are explored through an in-depth examination of one significant object: French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye’s bronze “Lion Crushing a Serpent.” These include the significance of technical mastery and the creative process and the impact of the artist’s reputation. In addition to text labels, audio guides and docent tours, the exhibitions are enhanced by interactive tools organized by the High, together with MuseumLab, an international alliance initiated by the Louvre for which the High serves as the only U.S. partner.
Lead patronage for the project has been provided by longtime Board Member Anne Cox Chambers. Accenture is the Presenting Partner. UPS, Turner Broadcasting Corporation, the Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines and AXA Art Insurance are Lead Corporate Partners for “Louvre Atlanta.” The Foundation Partner is The Sara Giles Moore Foundation. Additional support has been provided by Forward Arts Foundation, Frances B. Bunzl and Tull Charitable Foundation. The Rich Foundation serves as Planning Partner for the project. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

The Seen Gallery Hosts Spring Group Show at New Location in Downtown Decatur
Featuring the Work of Jerald Mask, David Hansford and Amy Bradford
Opening Night Reception on Saturday, April 4 from 7 to 10 p.m.
The Seen Gallery will host a group show beginning Saturday, April 4 through Wednesday, May 13, 2009 featuring the colorful and vibrant works of abstract painters Jerald Mask, David Hansford and The Seen Gallery co-owner Amy Bradford. The opening night reception will be held on Saturday, April 4 from 7-10 p.m. at The Seen Gallery's new location in Downtown Decatur. Guests are invited to enjoy complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, meet the artists, and peruse the incredible art, which will be available for purchase.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
The reward of viewing Amy Bradford's paintings is a chance to see mesmerizing works of art, drawn from the artist's vision of celestial and earthbound panoramas, and perhaps it is a chance to see the depth and beauty of light absorbed and reflected from a gilded surface. Amy's paintings are created beyond the surface level - her art, drawn from physical reality, draws the viewer in to the depth of the work, compelling us to create an interpretation of the ethereal image in our own minds.
Whether he paints the illuminated fall canopy of a Gingko tree or the muted tones of the beach underfoot, David Hansford's works create harmonies that soothe the senses, nourish the spirit and encourage peaceful reflection. The controlled and deliberate use of color, the play of shadows and reflections and the sensuous feel of a multitude of textures allows David to paint the ordinary in nature in a beautifully extraordinary way.
Jerald Mask has spent the last three decades refining his abstract imagery. His circle paintings, painted over the last decade and a half, reflect this refinement through his incredible control of the brush and masterful use of color.

ABOUT THE SEEN GALLERY:
The Seen Gallery, a multi-discipline art gallery that features established and mid-career artists, was founded by photographer Bill Bibb in October 2002. Painter Amy Bradford joined Bill as co-owner and curator in 2005; and, after six years of success at its original location in the Oakhurst Village, the two moved The Seen Gallery to a larger street front location by Decatur Square – an ideal area for sidewalk strolling and window-shopping. The new 1,700 square foot gallery is now conveniently located at 415 Church Street, just two doors down from Java Monkey coffee and wine bar and directly across from the Decatur MARTA station. New exhibitions will open every four to five weeks, creating a fresh, dynamic experience for each visit to the gallery.

The 5th Annual SweetWater 420 Fest has announced its performer lineup for the two-day music and arts festival celebrating Earth Day on April 18 and 19, 2009 in Atlanta’s historic Candler Park. This year’s lineup includes Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Robert Walter’s 20th Congress, The Heavy Pets, Entropy, Donna Hopkins with special guest Ralph Roddenbury, Left Williams Band, Laura Reed and Deep Pocket, Jamie McLean - formerly of the Dirty Brass Band, Turtle Folk, Packway Handle Band, Squirrelheads, Sam Thacker, Nashvillian Family, Ramblers, Juco, 3052, and Candler Park’s own - Webster.
Admission to the festival is free for live music, food, and eco-oriented activities and educational experiences. A portion of proceeds from wristband sales are donated to Candler Park Neighborhood Association, to make improvements to Candler Park.
Founded by SweetWater Brewing Company in 2004, the two-day eco-oriented festival attracts thousands of visitors to Atlanta each year and has emerged into a music and arts-driven educational platform for environmental awareness and activism. Festival goers will have the opportunity to learn numerous ways in which they can take earth friendly practices back to their communities and homes in SweetWater’s “Planet 420” village. This year’s workshops include: Introduction to Solar Power; Saving the Earth and Your Home: Green Realty 101; Earth Trivia with Gas South; Climate Issues in the Southeast. Planet 420 will also have yoga classes and massage therapy.
Each year, the SweetWater 420 Fest is held in Candler Park, a 55-acre city park located in the charming neighborhood that surrounds it, also known as Candler Park. Since the festival’s inception, organizers have worked to better the Candler Park community through ongoing community-oriented and environmental initiatives. Over the past four years, the festival has donated money to the Candler Park Neighborhood Association for community and park improvements. The festival is currently working to raise funds to be earmarked for specific park improvements, which will create a sustainable park for the community to enjoy for generations to come.
In an effort to limit the impact the festival has on the neighborhood and to fulfill SweetWater 420 Fest’s environmental mission, festival organizers encourage everyone to do their part and take MARTA. The festival is conveniently located just two blocks from the Candler Park MARTA station.

Nature, Undisturbed Photo Exhibition Opens Friday April 24th
Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone hosts 10 days of fun events
Nature Photography and Land Conservation – a perfect fit.
Southern Conservation Trust is hosting its inaugural juried Nature Photography Exhibition Nature, Undisturbed April 24th through May 3rd 2009 at the Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone. The 10 day celebration will benefit the Trust’s land conservation program in the Southern Crescent.
The fifty superior photographs selected for the exhibition will showcase the natural beauty of our local landscape and highlight the importance of conservation as our region develops. In addition to an open category “Nature Undisturbed”, a second category will feature images of the Trust’s three public preserves in Fayette County: Sams Lake Sanctuary south of Fayetteville, and Line Creek and Flat Creek Nature Areas in Peachtree City. Exhibition visitors will vote on the People’s Choice Award.
This exciting Benefit show is modeled on the very successful five-year-old SlowExposures Exhibition, held every September in Concord, Pike County. “Nature Undisturbed attracted 200 entries from across the Southeast – unheard of for a first-time event - and the quality of the photographs is outstanding,” according to Donna Rosser, Exhibition Director and founder of the Fayette Photo Club.
The jurors are recognized experts in photography and collecting. Greg Newington, who recently opened a gallery in Serenbe, is an internationally honored photographer. Thomas Swanston, co-owner of Studio Swan in Serenbe, is a well known Georgia artist whose works are in many esteemed private and public collections.
Business sponsors have provided prizes including gift certificates for camera equipment, a professional grade lens, and quality framing. Brent Scarbrough & Company will present the Sponsor’s Choice Award at the Opening Reception. Other sponsors are Integrated Science & Engineering and Brown Nelms & Company.
The Exhibition will offer a full schedule of fun and informative events. The Opening Reception will offer guests a chance to hear the Jurors and meet the winning photographers. There will be two workshops - on nature photography using the LensBaby lens and collecting photography. Family Day on Sunday April 26th will feature hot dogs, smoothies, and a great photo opportunity with the Winged Ambassadors program led by Dale Arrowood with his exciting birds of prey. Friday May 1st is a Wine & Cheese Tasting and Sunday May 3rd go on an African Safari with Tom Even’s you-are-there slideshow.
Nature, Undisturbed is a great opportunity to add affordable landscape and wildlife art to your décor. Framed photographs and unframed prints will be available for purchase during the Exhibition and online afterwards. All donations and a percentage of all sales will help preserve greenspace and maintain the public preserves the Trust manages.
For more information about Nature Undisturbed or the Trust, or to volunteer, email info@sctlandtrust.org, call 770-486-7774, or visit the Trust’s website www.sctlandtrust.org

State Launches Ground-Breaking Economic Development Platform for Creative Industry
Georgia’s creative businesses and their products available on www.GaMadeGaGrownProducts.org
The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) and the Georgia Tourism Foundation announced the launch of www.GaMadeGaGrownProducts.org, a detailed creative industries database that is the first-ever statewide economic development strategy of its kind. It is the best way to search for Georgia’s arts-centric businesses: from handmade jewelry to local festivals, pick-your-own farms to performers. This growing directory will connect buyers and sellers, corporations and corporate suppliers, locals and visitors to Georgia's cultural assets and creative small businesses.
“Georgia is rich in authentic local products and unique experiences,” states Gilda Watters, Managing Director of the Tourism Foundation. “We wanted to make it easier for residents, visitors and businesses to access local artisans, producers and performers.”
Started in 2007 by the Georgia Tourism Foundation, the state’s Creative Economies Initiative is a unique effort to galvanize arts-centric businesses and promote products made and grown in the state, and GaMadeGaGrownProducts.org is one part of this important initiative. Creative businesses in Georgia give back tremendously to the community, employ more than 88,000 individuals and add millions of dollars to their local economies. By helping to focus state, regional, national and international attention on the rich cultural contributions and unique sense of place creative businesses contribute to the state, this initiative will positively impact their economic sustainability and future growth by helping to connect buyers and sellers, corporations and corporate suppliers, locals and visitors to Georgia’s creative small businesses. As a web registry with a searchable database of the state’s arts-centric industries, complete with business profiles, locations, pictures, contact information and more, it is economic development in its purest form.
Listings on the website are free, so artists, producers and retailers selling authentic Georgia Made Georgia Grown products and productions are eligible to be part of this marketing tool. It is not too late to sign up; simply visit www.GaMadeGaGrownProducts.org to register. Encourage your local artisans, entertainers, festival planners and theaters to join: not only will it make your searches easier, but it will help them gain exposure and form useful partnerships.
With the website now up and running, there has never been a better time to explore all that Georgia has to offer. Visit www.GaMadeGaGrownProducts.org today and find a unique treasure or authentic experience to enjoy. Georgia’s Visitors Information Centers, Regional Travel Associations and www.exploregeorgia.org are excellent resources and can offer assistance in planning your visit to Georgia.
The Georgia Tourism Foundation allows for the creation of new public-private partnerships that merge and strengthen Georgia's tourism marketing efforts, in order to attract more visitors and increase the industry's economic impact throughout the state. This non-profit, public-private organization brings together the leadership of the state’s premier tourism destinations to consolidate marketing efforts, pool resources and more effectively promote Georgia’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and rich attractions to vacationers.
The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) is the state's sales and marketing arm, the lead agency for attracting new business investment, encouraging the expansion of existing industry and small businesses, locating new markets for Georgia products, attracting tourists to Georgia, and promoting the state as a location for film, video and music projects, as well as planning and mobilizing state resources for economic development.

Top 10 U.S. Charity Wine Auctions Announced in March 31 Issue
The High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction has been named fourth in a national ranking of the Top 10 charity wine auctions in the United States by Wine Spectator Magazine in its March 31, 2009, issue, moving up one spot from last year’s ranking. Each year, Wine Spectator gathers information on charity auctions throughout the country and ranks its Top 10. In 2008 the results of 40 charity wine auctions were tracked to compile the rankings.
The 2008 High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction set records as the most successful live auction in its 16-year history, bringing in a net profit of more than $2.1 million, marking only the second time in its history to raise more than $2 million. When speaking on the 2008 ranking, Senior Development Manager Woodie Wisebram noted that: “Being the High’s largest fundraising event and also the largest charity wine auction in the country that specifically benefits the arts, we are excited about moving up in Wine Spectator ranking scale to number four in their Top 10. We are looking forward to another successful year in 2009.”

Barry C. Hughson Leaves Atlanta Ballet to Take the Helm at Boston Ballet
Barry C. Hughson will resign his post as Executive Director of the Atlanta Ballet, effective at the end of the Ballet’s performance season on May 17, 2009. He leaves Atlanta to take the helm of the Boston Ballet in Boston, Massachusetts, the country’s fifth largest dance institution.
According to Hughson, “My wife and I have loved our time in Atlanta, and we will miss this amazing Company, the City, and the dear friends we have made here”, adding, “We are also excited to be moving back to New England where we will be closer to our family”.
Over his two-year tenure at Atlanta Ballet, Hughson successfully engineered the move to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center, completed the sale of 1400 West Peachtree resulting in the elimination of the Company’s accumulated debt, resolved the dispute with the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra resulting in the return of live music to many of the Ballet’s performances, and developed the $14.8 million dollar “Choreographing Our Future” campaign. To date, the Ballet has secured $11.2 million dollars – 76% of the campaign goal. It is already the most successful fundraising campaign in Atlanta Ballet’s 79-year history.
“Barry has accomplished so much in his time here”, said Sandy Rose, Chairman of the Ballet’s Board of Trustees, “While we will miss him, he is leaving us in a unique position of strength as we move the Ballet forward, and for that, we are deeply grateful”.
The Atlanta Ballet will announce an Interim Executive Director in the coming days to ensure continuity and to continue the momentum that has been built under Hughson’s leadership. A national search will begin for Hughson’s permanent successor.
“Atlanta has a treasure in Atlanta Ballet, and I am proud to have been able to make a contribution to this remarkable legacy that began nearly 80 years ago”, said Hughson, adding “With the successes of the past two years, the Trustees can feel the wind at their backs, and are well-positioned to take the organization into the future”.
Hughson will begin his new position in Boston on June 1st.
Founded in 1929, Atlanta Ballet is the longest continuously operating ballet company in the United States. Atlanta Ballet’s eclectic repertoire spans ballet history, highlighted by beloved classics and inventive originals.
Among Atlanta Ballet’s proud and unique 80-year history are its three Artistic Directors, Miss Dorothy Alexander, whose vision brought dance to the South; Robert Barnett, who turned Atlanta Ballet into a professional company; and currently, and for the past 14 years John McFall. Under McFall’s leadership Atlanta Ballet continues its commitment to share and educate audiences on the empowering joy of dance.
Atlanta Ballet opened the Centre for Dance Education in 1996 and is dedicated to nurturing young dancers while providing an outlet for adults to express their creativity. With diverse class offerings and student population, the Centre serves over 150,000 people in metro Atlanta each year. Atlanta Ballet's roots remain firmly grounded in the Atlanta community and continue to play a vital role in the city's cultural growth and revitalization.

Ludley Poem to be Published in Confluence
Dr. David Ludley, Clayton State University professor of Art History and English, recently had his poem “Sundowners” chosen, through double-blind peer-review, to be published in the literary journal Confluence, a publication of the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs, in conjunction with sponsoring universities across the country, including Duke, Stanford and others.
“After I submitted the poem to various literary journals for double-blind peer review, I was very pleased when the editor of the respected journal Confluence informed me it had been selected for publication, Ludley says. “On one level, "Sundowners" is about my mother's journey through the stages of Alzheimer's disease, the loss of short-term memory, and the symptom of `Sundowners’ Syndrome, which is the tendency to hallucinate and experience paranoia late in the day.
“On other levels, the poem involves trust -- between a father and a son, a wife and a husband, and other levels of trust in what is real. This work evolved through my experiences helping with the care of my mother during various summers and, later, visiting her in the nursing home. It is also grounded in my love and respect for my late mother.”
Ludley admits that writing piece was a challenge.
“This poem has been years in the making,” he says. “It was challenge writing about someone I love, my late mother, enduring the tragedy of what Alzheimer's does to the mind. At the same time, I had to be true to the facts of the experience and not romanticize or embellish.”
Despite the challenges, Ludley says the experience was very rewarding.
“Having my mother's story late in life and the story of her Alzheimer's published in a well-regarded journal that others may read and learn from has been the most rewarding,” he says.
Ludley also looks forward to the future.
“The success of this publication encourages me to further pursue my other creative projects--including other poems and a novel I have been working on for some time now,” he explains. “The novel is entitled “Buffalo Fandango” and involves my travels out west, which includes a thread of Native-American mythology and its relation to an explorer-ancestor, all brought up to my experiences in the late Sixties in California.”
A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

School Renovation Produces Gift for Budding Artists
District leaders, school administrators, Iraqi security forces and Multinational Division Baghdad paratroopers celebrated the completion of a school renovation March 3 in eastern Baghdad's Rusafa district.
The construction of a new art facility was the focus for the renovations in the Al-Moutasam kindergarten. Other refurbishments included new plumbing and electrical systems, new classroom doors and windows, and a fresh coat of paint.
The art facility is a sign that Iraqi education officials are developing educational programs outside of general subjects, officials said.
"This is a great thing that we are seeing this school being renovated in our district," said Alaa Radey, an official from the Rusafa higher education ministry. "This is a sign of progression in our educational systems with the grand opening of this school's art facility. This is a great thing not just for Rusafa and Baghdad, but for all of Iraq."
Iraqi security forces and 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment paratroopers attended the event as a sign of partnership with the district and its citizens.
"The turnout of people today is phenomenal," said Army Sgt. 1st Class Donald Workman, a Gainesville, Fla., native assigned to the nonlethal effects section of the squadron. "This is the best school opening yet, and it's a good sign that great things are coming to Iraq."
The district's education department is in the planning stages for several projects, including the construction of more than 30 new schools throughout the district and the renovation of more than 70 existing schools.

State Farm Insurance to Serve as Official Sponsor for Fiesta Atlanta '09!
/PRNewswire/ -- Lanza Group, LLC, Atlanta's leading Hispanic marketing, PR & events firm, last week proudly announced that State Farm Insurance is the official insurance sponsor of Fiesta Atlanta '09, an outdoor Cinco de Mayo festival celebrating Latino culture, music and food. Fiesta Atlanta '09 takes place on Sunday, May 3, 2009 from 10 AM to 7 PM at Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta.
For State Farm, the partnership represents an excellent opportunity to reach out to the Latino community. Last year's event attracted over 40,000 attendees. "Fiesta Atlanta '09 will allow us to connect with the community, giving them information that helps them manage risk, both personally and in their businesses," said Ashley Deadwyler-Jones, Marketing Analyst at State Farm. "We're proud to be a sponsor for the third consecutive year and look forward to a day of fun, family and festivities."
Fiesta Atlanta is a day-long celebration of Latino culture, featuring continuous live musical performances on 2 stages by national and local recording artists, sponsor displays with many free product samples, arts and crafts and authentic food from many Latin-American countries.
"We're honored to have State Farm Insurance as our official insurance sponsor," said Ralph E. Herrera, President of Lanza Group, LLC. "Their presence as a founding sponsor of Fiesta Atlanta has helped to educate and inform our attendees and we look forward to their participation again in 2009 and beyond."
