ATLANTA (February 8, 2018) – The Center for Puppetry Arts’ award-winning Distance Learning department and the Hispanic Health Coalition of Georgia (HHCGA) are teaming up in a strategic partnership to develop a new interactive program to educate and empower Hispanic and Latino communities in Georgia with the knowledge and tools they need to prevent chronic diseases and to live longer, healthier lives.
Sponsored by The Home Depot Foundation’s Building Community Network, the Healthy Choices Puppetry Program for Hispanic Youth will leverage the artistic talents, technical resources and digital reach of the Center for Puppetry Arts’ Distance Learning programming with the cultural knowledge and expertise of the HHCGA to improve the well-being of the Hispanic/Latino community of Georgia.
HHCGA, a more than 28-year-old non-profit, is Georgia’s only statewide organization focused on Hispanic/Latino chronic disease prevention and better health outcomes. It identifies needs and service gaps leading to health disparities for Georgia Hispanics and offers direct community services and supportive activities to improve the health of Georgia Latinos. As an expert in community health promotion, education, policy and health advocacy, HHCGA creates high quality, culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate health care and prevention services for their community.
“All communities have their own unique challenges around wellness. Ours include the rising rates of diabetes, Types I and Types II in adults and youth, largely manifested by poor dietary choices and increasingly sedentary lifestyles. We wanted to find a creative, engaging and educational medium to combat these issues, so we reached out to the Center for Puppetry Arts,” said Shirley E. Borghi, Executive Director & Co-Vice Chairman of the Hispanic Health Coalition of Georgia.
The Distance Learning program is the Center for Puppetry Arts’ digital programming platform, bringing curriculum-based workshops and puppet performances to every state in the U.S. and to countries all around the world. The department currently offers a variety of programming related to health, nutrition and safety to schools and community groups. According to Distance Learning Director Sara Burmenko, “Technology now makes it easier than ever to bring our programming directly into communities, connecting to schools and other community organizations…really anywhere that has an internet connection. The platform we use also allows us to connect to multiple schools and communities for one program.”
Using the art of puppetry, the Center skillfully uses performances and workshops to educate and enlighten people about serious issues of health and lifestyle in ways that are fun and accessible. The partnership with HHCGA will ensure that the content for Healthy Choices Puppetry Program for Hispanic Youth will be culturally relevant and targeted for maximum impact. The goal is to help Hispanic Youth living in the metro Atlanta area become more comfortable with healthy habits such as practicing hygiene, choosing healthy meals, and exercising.
“We know it’s hard to get young people to do some of the things they need to do. But if we can make it fun, engaging and interactive, we increase our chances of helping them make the lifestyle changes they need for a healthier life and increased sustainability.” said Borghi.

Center for Puppetry Arts Prepares for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™
LIVE Musical Premiere of Beloved Holiday TV Classic Opens in Atlanta on November 18
Christmas is in the air at the Center for Puppetry Arts! Preparations for its new upcoming holiday show, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™, have been in the works since earlier this year. Adapted and directed by the Center’s Artistic Director, Jon Ludwig, the production is based on the beloved 1964 stop-motion animated special, and provides the audience with the opportunity to experience the timeless tale of Rudolph and his misfit friends in a whole new way: live on stage! Opening on November 18, Ludwig’s adaptation for the puppet stage faithfully embraces the original and will include all of the beloved characters such as Hermey, the elf who is an aspiring dentist, Yukon Cornelius, and the Abominable Snow Monster. The Center is honored to work with Character Arts LLC to debut the first licensed stage production of this holiday classic.
“The story of Rudolph has endured because it talks of self-acceptance, which everyone is looking for,” says Ludwig on the universal appeal of this story. “It’s a classic tale of self-discovery and a true ‘growing-up’ story. Rudolph and Hermey are misfits among misfits, but in the end, their non-conformities are what make them so valuable. I know that just as I was touched so deeply by the original production back in 1964, we can reach many, young and old, through the magic of this great story told within the imaginative medium of live puppet theater.”
The Center’s production team is heading up the monumental task of recreating one of the world’s most treasured holiday classics. The Puppet Building Shop has become a veritable “Santa’s Workshop,” as the team works to design and build the approximately 60 puppets that will appear on stage. Adapting such memorable characters to the puppet stage is not something the team takes lightly; Rudolph is already being recognized as the most “measured” show the Center has ever produced, as meticulous attention is paid to details such as replicating appropriate scale in the production. In order to be as true to the original as possible, Resident Puppet Designer/Builder Jason von Hinezmeyer has watched the original 1964 movie more than 200 times, much of it frame by frame.
As Rudolph production flies along, the excitement at the Center continues to build as the timeless tale comes to life. “Dedicated management of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ and The Island of Misfit Toys™ has always been at the core of Character Arts operations,” said Jonathan Flom, the principal of Character Arts LLC who manages the rights of the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ brand. “We can think of no better stewards than the Center for Puppetry Arts and are thrilled to have them help us bring this beloved story to a whole new audience. We are extremely excited by the Center’s production and can’t wait to see this story come to life.”

Don Quixote!
WHEN FANTASY AND REALITY COLLIDE, ADVENTURE ABOUNDS IN THE CENTER’S NEW BILINGUAL ADAPTATION OF THE CERVANTES CLASSIC
Ever wished for that one opportunity to “get it right?” To start over and live your life the way you always dreamed it should be? To see how one man attempts to correct his past, visit the Center for Puppetry Arts to enjoy Don Quixote, a new production about a man who journeys to the brink of madness and back in his quest for one more chance to “get it right.” This bilingual show adapted by the Center’s Associate Producer Bobby Box, in collaboration with Manuel Moran of Teatro SEA (Sociedad Educativa de las Artes/Society of the Educational Arts) of New York, is presented Feb 3-15, 2009, as part of the 2008-2009 New Directions Series.
In this lively adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ classic adventure Don Quixote de la Mancha, Don Quijano, a nobleman who longs for the gallant days of his youth, and his faithful servant Sancho embark on a quest for chivalry and romance that leads them on the journey of a lifetime. In this legendary tale, Don Quijano becomes convinced that he is the noble knight Don Quixote de La Mancha. His fantasy and reality collide as windmills become giants, an inn becomes a castle, a flock of sheep turns into an army, and the old gentleman and his servant become defenders of faith, honor, and glory. It’s a story about a man who attempts to bring honor and good will to the world, but instead, finds himself.
Directed by Bobby Box, Don Quixote showcases puppeteers Luis Hernandez, Anthony Rodriguez, Yolanda Hernandez and Alejandro Gutierrez, who operate rod marionettes designed by Patrick Martel. The composer and musical director is Thom Jenkins and the musician/guitarist is Mark Cohn. Sound for the show is designed by Mimi Epstein and the lighting is designed by Liz Lee. The set is designed by Kat Conley and costumes are designed by Jamie Bullins.
Suggested for audiences 12 and up, Don Quixote will be presented in the Downstairs Theater. Showtimes are as follows: February 3-15, 2009: Matinees are Tue - Fri @ 11am; Evening Showtimes are Thurs-Sat @ 8pm; Sun @ 5pm.
