Includes $20,000 awarded to Horizon Theatre Company for the New South Young Playwrights Festival
ATLANTA – National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $25 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $20,000 to Horizon Theatre Company for The New South Young Playwrights Festival. The Art Works category is the NEA’s largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts.
“It is energizing to see the impact that the arts are making throughout the United States. These NEA-supported projects, such as this one to Horizon, are good examples of how the arts build stronger and more vibrant communities, improve well-being, prepare our children to succeed, and increase the quality of our lives,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “At the National Endowment for the Arts, we believe that all people should have access to the joy, opportunities and connections the arts bring.”
“Horizon Theatre would like to thank the National Endowment for the Arts for this grant to our New South Young Playwrights Contest and Festival which is focused on the development of the next generation of American dramatists,” says Horizon Co-Artistic Director Lisa Adler. “We are truly grateful for the support the NEA has provided for not only Horizon and our commitment to the growth and education of young artists, but to so many other significant arts events and programs in the Atlanta area.
This year, Horizon Theatre will host its 20th annual New South Young Playwrights Festival May 28 – June 2, 2018. The Festival is a FREE summer playwriting intensive for a diverse group of 20-25 high school and college student contest winners. Horizon solicits play submissions from students in high schools, colleges, training programs, conservatories and theatres nationwide. Students come from all across the country to take part in a series of classes, seminars, workshops, roundtables and rehearsals with professional artists, teachers and playwrights. The Festival culminates in a public showcase of their newly written short plays. As part of the Festival, Horizon Theatre provides participants with housing and meals for the entire week – including breakfast, lunch and dinner. Horizon Theatre receives no income from Festival participants or activities; The Festival’s continued success is contingent upon funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Art Works category. And this award will be pivotal in assisting us with providing young people with the chance to develop their skills as writers, thinkers and communicators in the company of peers and professionals for our 20th annual New South Young Playwrights Festival in 2018.
Horizon is currently accepting submissions from high school and college age writers for the 2018 New South Young Playwrights Contest and Festival. The application deadline is March 1, 2018. Grassroots Arts Program Provides Grants of up to $1500 to Fund the Arts!
The Grassroots Arts Program (GAP) provides up to $1,500 per organization to fund art programs in Georgia. The goal of the program is to ensure that all Georgians have access to the arts. All 159 Georgia Counties receive funding based on an equal per-capita allocation. Arts Clayton has been appointed by the Georgia Council for the Arts as the FY2010 re-granting agency for the Grassroots Arts Program in Butts, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Jasper, Lamar, Newton, Rockdale, and Spalding counties. The Grassroots Arts Program is supported by the Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia Council for the Arts is a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Grassroots Arts Program (GAP) is designed to help smaller, emerging groups get off the ground – to “fill in the gap” between start-up and when an organization is ready to apply directly for larger funding or become self-sustaining. Established groups may also apply for GAP funding to make quality improvements – to get to “the next level” of artistry – or to expand their programs and develop new audiences, especially in underserved communities. GAP is available to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations for Art related programming. Examples of projects eligible for funding include: visual arts exhibits, concerts, readings, theater and dance performances, film programs, folk art projects, storytelling, workshops, and art festivals. Projects combining arts and education are encouraged.
This statewide arts program encourages local collaborations between artists, arts organizations, and non-arts organizations in order to serve a broad range of Georgia’s residents. Funding for art projects is open to any non-profit 50l(c)(3) tax exempt organization or unit of local government. Civic clubs, churches, theatre groups, arts festivals, Boys & Girls clubs, schools, parent-teacher organizations, libraries, Senior Citizens’ Centers, Parks & Recreation Departments also may be eligible to apply. GAP projects will create new opportunities for citizens to experience the arts, while fostering greater awareness and developing local partnerships in the arts.
Six GAP grant writing workshops will be offered in September. The purpose of the workshops is to demystify the grant-writing process for potential applicants. These workshops are free of charge – however seating may be limited and pre-registration is required. All applicants (especially new and first-time applicants) are strongly encouraged to attend.
FY2010 Grant Workshops are currently scheduled on Wednesday September 9 at 5:30 pm; Tuesday September 15 at 10 am and 1:30 pm; Thursday, September 17 at 1:30 pm; Tuesday September 22 at 10 am; and Saturday September 26 at 10 am. The purpose of the workshops is to demystify the grant-writing process for potential applicants. These workshops are free of charge - however, pre-registration is required and all applicants (especially new and first-time applicants) are strongly encouraged to attend. National Endowment for the Arts Announces Recovery Grants to State and Regional Arts Agencies
Friday the National Endowment for the Arts announced $19.8 million in one-time grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) to the state arts agencies and regional arts organizations to support the arts sector of the economy. Potential recipients include organizations in the performing, visual, and literary arts. Please see the complete list of grants.
"We applaud the ready response demonstrated by our national, state, and regional partners to support the arts," said NEA Acting Chairman Patrice Walker Powell. "We look forward to witnessing the positive impact of this funding opportunity."
The NEA’s state and regional partners will invest their Recovery funds in projects that assist arts organizations in retaining critical staff as well as artists and other contractual personnel. These critical staff will enhance the ability of arts organizations to realize their artistic and public service goals. State and regional agencies will mirror the NEA’s Recovery grant program and adapt their programs to respond to the particular needs of their constituents.
In July, the Arts Endowment will announce a second category of NEA Recovery grants, one-time direct grants to nonprofit arts organizations including local arts agencies, statewide assemblies of local arts agencies, arts service organizations, and other arts organizations. These grants will support the nonprofit arts sector, which has seen declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn.
