Nature Undisturbed Photo Exhibition at Dogwood Gallery, April 9 - 25

Winners Announced at Opening Reception on April 16

Nature Undisturbed 2010 juried photography exhibit scheduled at Dogwood Gallery for April. The schedule of events for the second annual nature-themed photography show is set. In 2009 the inaugural show drew nearly 200 photographs from 43 photographers. This time the show attracted much more attention in Georgia and nationally. Over 300 photos were submitted by 75 photographers representing 10 states including two west coast entrants. Of these entries, 61 photos by 49 photographers from 8 states, including Georgia, were selected for 2010. Fayette County photographers represented total 14 and there are 7 photographers from Coweta. Twenty-one other Georgia photographers have work in the show. Photography in this collection ranges from brilliant landscapes, awesome macro shots and artistic abstracts showcasing the beauty of the natural world.

Nature Undisturbed will hang at Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone from April 9 through April 25. Opening reception for this event is Friday April 16 at 6pm. “We are expecting a packed gallery, more than last year,” said Greg Blair, co-director of the show and owner of Dogwood Gallery. Saturday April 17 at 6pm begins with a wine tasting event followed by a talk by Susan Todd-Raque, one of the founders of Atlanta Celebrates Photography and an art consultant specializing in 20th century photography. On April 22, at 7pm, juror Lucinda Bunnen speaks about her choices for the winning photos. Saturday April 24 is Family Day at the show. Southern Conservation Trust will be on hand to talk about their group, have some creatures, and fun for the whole family. Closing day, April 25 at 2pm Kathryn Kolb, director of the new Serenbe Photography Center will present “The Beauty of Trees.”

Nature Undisturbed is a celebration of the natural world. The show brings together a diverse collection of photography showcasing the wonders of nature that many don’t take the time to see. It is the hope of the show creators that after viewing the photography, you are inspired to get out on the not-so-beaten path. Perhaps you happen to take along a camera to capture the light through the leaves and continue to enjoy that day each time you view the photo. This is the show that brings the outside in for all to enjoy. Come, see the show and look through our windows on the world around us.

Donna Rosser, director of the show, said “We had more entries from the local Trust properties this time. That tells me that the event is raising awareness in our community and in Georgia about Southern Conservation Trust and the work that they do.”

Southern Arts Federation Becomes South Arts

Introducing a New Identity and Strategic Plan

On March 9, 2010, Gerri Combs, executive director of South Arts (formerly Southern Arts Federation) unveiled the organization's new identity during a webcast. Reflecting South Arts’ vision of community, connections, inspiration and global reach, the new identity reinforces the organization’s commitment to creating and sharing knowledge about the arts in the South and the role of a regional arts organization. South Arts’ Strategic Planning Committee, in collaboration with consultants Marmillion & Co., has spent the last year redefining their organizational strategy, positioning, and branding. Research with South Arts constituents, key thought leaders, in the form of individual and group interviews, were conducted. Their feedback signaled the need for South Arts' to respond to the arts environment and cultural trends with a regional perspective, address arts-related issues important to our region, and to link the South with the nation and the world through the arts.

“The history of the former Southern Arts Federation, now South Arts, has been that we had a strong partnership with our nine states as well as the National Endowment for the Arts and other partners,” said Todd P. Lowe, chair of the South Arts board of directors. “And we feel confident that those relationships are not going to change because of this plan but will, in fact, probably deepen and we hope to expand them in more meaningful ways.”

“I think as you look at our revised mission, vision and identity, you’ll see a real commitment to thinking deeply about who we are in the South,” said Margaret S. Mertz, Ph.D., South Arts board executive vice chair and leader of the planning committee. “We want South Arts to fly at the 30,000 foot level. We will land in strategic spots to make our work happen but we are committed to this broader vision, this upper level view, of what the issues are that face the South.”

These changes are being implemented as the organization celebrates its 35th anniversary. South Arts, a nonprofit regional arts organization, was founded in 1975 to build on the South's unique heritage and enhance the public value of the arts. The organization works in partnership with the nine state arts agencies of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. South Arts is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, foundations, corporations, individuals and member states.

The strategic plan summary document and a recording of the webcast in its entirety can be viewed at www.southarts.org/publications.

The Wine Auction is the top charity fundraising event in Atlanta, the fourth largest charity wine auction in the United States by “Wine Spectator” and the number-one charity wine auction benefiting the arts. The funds generated by the Wine Auction, which amount to more than $15 million over the last 17 years, are a significant contribution to the Museum’s acquisitions, exhibitions and educational programming. Proceeds help to make possible special exhibitions and partnerships such as the upcoming multi-year, multi-exhibition partnership between the High and The Museum of Modern Art, and it also provides funds for dynamic youth education programs that draw thousands of schoolchildren to the High each year.

High Museum of Art
The High Museum of Art, founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, is the leading art museum in the southeastern United States. With more than 12,000 works of art in its permanent collection, the High Museum of Art has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American and decorative art; significant holdings of European paintings; a growing collection of African American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, photography and African art. The High is also dedicated to supporting and collecting works by Southern artists and is distinguished as the only major museum in North America to have a curatorial department specifically devoted to the field of folk and self-taught art. The High’s Media Arts department produces acclaimed annual film series and festivals of foreign, independent and classic cinema. In November 2005, the High opened three new buildings by architect Renzo Piano that more than doubled the Museum’s size, creating a vibrant “village for the arts” at the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta. Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative Scheduled for Atlanta

Local Organizations Unite to CoSponsor Event

ATLANTA – Several major Atlantabased arts funding organizations have partnered with the Kennedy Center to present critical information specifically of interest to the arts community.

Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative will be presented 10:00 a.m., February 24, 2010 at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts. Michael Kaiser, Kennedy Center president, will be interviewed by Georgia Council for the Arts’ executive director Susan S. Weiner during a conversation that aims to stimulate audience dialogue and present solutions to the challenges that many arts organizations are facing. Kaiser will address the issues of fundraising, board development, budgeting and effective marketing. Attendees of the Atlanta event will be encouraged to submit questions for a response during the program. There is no charge to attend the Atlanta Arts In Crisis event but advance registration is required. Seating reservations can be made at the website for Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts.

About the Initiative

To date, Kaiser has extended his arts management knowledge, gained through decades of experience, to audiences in more than twentyfive states. Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative is a response to the current state of emergency facing the unique business model of arts organizations. Unlike the typical business, however, arts organizations have a high percentage of community involvement that is dependent upon volunteers, advocates and, most significantly, donors. Raising funds is always a delicate twostep, but given the financial uncertainty surrounding most donors, corporate as well as individual, the fundraising “dance” is in danger of becoming a solo performance. Arts are, in fact, in crisis.

“This event is particularly important for arts organizations who feel as though they have tried everything and are still facing imminent failure,” offers Weiner. “Mr. Kaiser has practical advice and timetested solutions to offer that resonate on a local, state and regional level for small, midsize and large organizations.”

In addition to the February event, the Kennedy Center also provides free and confidential planning assistance to nonprofit arts organizations in areas relevant to maintaining vitality and longevity in a troubled economy. More than fourhundred organizations in forty states have received assistance as a result of the initiative.

“Each community is dealing with its own unique and specific challenges,” says Kaiser. “Communicating in person allows us to be more effective in advising those organizations in need.” Organizations with representatives attending the event can receive information on additional components of the Arts in Crisis Initiative that enables senior arts managers across the United States to volunteer as mentors to other arts organizations.

The Kennedy Center will quickly match organizations in need with an executive staff member or a volunteer mentor in the local area.

About the Kennedy Center

Since 2001, Michael M. Kaiser and his executive staff have shaped numerous arts leaders through the Kennedy Center Institute for Arts Management. The Institute provides a wide variety of training and support for arts management, including a capacity building program for culturally specific arts organizations; a program to train board members of arts organizations in the U.S.; international capacity building programs for arts organizations in sixty nations; and artsmanager.org, an interactive web resource for arts management professionals. The Kennedy Center also offers internship and fellowship programs, exposing arts professionals to various aspects of arts management.

About the Partner Organizations

Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative is presented in Atlanta with the support of the following organizations: Atlanta Performs, City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech, Foundation Center Atlanta, Fulton County Arts Council, Georgia Assembly of Community Arts Agencies, Georgia Council for the Arts, Metropolitan Atlanta Arts and Culture Coalition, Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund, Nonprofit Issues Forum, the Nonprofit Studies Program of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University, Robert R. Woodruff Arts Center and the Southern Arts Federation.
